Those signed up as definites and maybes as of 1/30/2007 are confirmed. I cannot allow any new people to sign up for the trip after this date and be apart of the group. Thanks -------------------------- ![]() Roam Around is coming to Pennsylvania! He requested the best the keystone state could offer and wants to get a bunch of us fools together for a grand ole hike that offered up scenery, challenge and great places to camp. I said the Black Forest Trail is just the place and thus this here trip was born!! Sign on up and we're going to do it in four days! The Black Forest Trail is a 42.5 mile loop trail in the northwest corner of Lycoming County near the village of Slate Run, PA. Slate Run is located along Pine Creek on highway 414, 27 miles north of Jersey Shore, PA. The trail starts and finishes in a pine plantation 0.8 mile from the Slate Run Village on the State forestry road. The foresty road leave Route 414 in a westerly direction. The name Black Forest was derived from the dense, dark (Black) virgin coniferous forests that originally covered the region. The BFT is famous for averaging a vista per mile. The Black Forest Trail is a rugged trail with many vistas as the trail winds up to heights overlooking Slate Run, Morris Run , Big Dam Hollow, Naval Run, and Pine Creek. There are many steep climbs on the Black Forest Trail but the vistas are well worth the effort. In the spring, when the water is high, the many creeks that traverse the trail provide numerous beautiful scenes. ------------------------- Here are my photos from another BFT trip: ------------------------- MY EVIL PLAN: Day one: Saturday, March 24th Meet at the trailhead on Rt. 44 between 830-9am. If you need a shuttle, I suggest getting there a little earlier. We'll start hiking by 9am. Starting at the southern trailhead on PA Route 44, we'll hike counter clockwise 12 arduous and well earned miles to the campsites on Little Slate Run. There are several sites there that should accomodate our large group, plus it's a really beautiful spot with some small cascades. Lots of stellar views and good steep climbs this day. Day two: Sunday, March 25th We'll continue counter clockwise from Little Slate Run and hike another tough 13 miles to the Campsites on Red Run. This is another really nice spot with some little waterfalls and several campsites to accomadate us. There is a macdaddy campsite a mile further on Morris Run, right near a double waterfall. Maybe some of us could camp there as well. Lots more views and more lung busting climbs on this day. Day three:Monday March 26th This will be a much easier day after day 1 and day 2. We'll continue counter clockwise from Red Run to the sites in the Lower Portion of County Line Branch Glen. The mileage should be a maximum of 10 miles this day. County Line Branch is very beautiful with lovely campsites! There really is only one lung busting climb for day 3 and that will be pretty early on. Day four:Tuesday, March 27th We'll have around 7 miles to complete the loop. Day 4 has some difficult climbs, especially the first one of the day. It is probably the steepest on the entire BFT. We'll cap it off with lunch at the Waterville Hotel for some cold beer and Mountain Burgers and Freedom Fries!! -- We're going to be a big group, this could make camping interesting. The places I picked have several spots close to eachother to fit our large group, but knowing how social TTers are, I am sure we're going to want to be as close as possible. If you have bivy/tarp set ups, I recommend them for this trip. Another good idea is to share tents. Hell, this will even save weight. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ maps and stuff: elevation profile: don't let this scare you ~ muuuuuhahahahahahahahaha ~ this is why good conditioning is needed for the trip: ![]() overview: ![]() these maps are courtesy of Pennsy ------------------------ A detailed trail-guide and map are available for $10.95 from: www.thehikingspot.com - click the link below. Order your Black Forest Trail map and guidebookset today. ![]() ---- there are options here. If you can't come out for the four days and only have the weekend to spare, you can gather up some other TTers who are just coming for the weekend and work out a shuttle. You would start with the rest of the group at the southern trailhead on PA Rt 44 and you can finish at the parking area on Slate Run Road near the Morris Run, not far from where we are camping Sunday night. Also, the BFT has cutoff and shortcut trails. So if you feel like skipping a hill or shortening your mileage, there are options to do so. I recommend ordering the trail map and guide. ---- Black Forest Trail weather watch (Waterville, PA on NOAA)
