Description

This Trip is Now Full!!!

If you planning to attend and are still on the maybe list, now is the time to sure up so that we can get good head count for the car shuttle.

Meet at the Garr Hill trailhead on Saturday, 10:00 AM local time.(That’s on the east side of the lake) and head north towards Fairfield Causeway. We would then cross over the causeway and head south on the west side towards the dam. There are several good places to camp on the west side, just north of Wolf Creek. That would make the mileage on Saturday close to 7+ miles. On Sunday we would continue south to the intersection of the Adena Trace Trail and the Midway Trail and then take the Midway Trail to it’s trailhead where we would have a shuttle car or cars parked to take us back to Garr Hill. That would make the mileage on Sunday close to 5+ miles.

You can use the below address on Yahoo Maps to get ya close:

Garr Hill Bait and Storage
8035 Pea Ridge Road
Brookville, Indiana 47012

This will get you to the intersection of Pea Ridge Road and Indiana 101. When you get to the intersection of Indiana 101 and Pea Ridge Road, the east side of the intersection has a sign stating Pea Ridge Road, however the west side was has a sign stating Garr Hill Road. (The sign is not that good) You need to go west on Garr Hill Road, past the Garr Hill Bait and Storage. Pea Ridge Road will veer off to the left about a half mile from the intersection. Stay on Garr Hill Road until you come to the Boat Ramp and the trailhead is just to the northeast of the parking lot.

Confirmed GPS coordinates are :

N 39 degrees 28.815 minutes
W 84 degrees 57.662 minutes

LOL

Thanks Windi!!!

This would make for an interesting trip as many of the folks who have hiked the Adena Trace have only done so on the west side. The Midway trail is new and I have never been on it!! The east side is not as rugged and tends to be a little more developed with a lot of changes in the terrain and vegetation. Additionally, we could camp right on the lake on the Westside and I think that’s always cool!!

The Friday night Camping spot is the same as it was last year, allowing easy access for anyone arriving late that evening (1+ miles to camp)See the Friday Night Camping thread for more info. The Friday night bunch would then drive to the Garr Hill Trailhead Saturday morning, arriving around 10:00 AM local time.

Trail info as follows:

The Adena Trail is single use 24-mile loop hiking trail located at Brookville Reservoir, 30 miles south of Richmond, Indiana and 30 miles north of Cincinnati. The Hoosier Hiking (HHC) Council was invited to design and build the Adena Trail. However, it should be noted that the majority of the west side of this trail existed in the form of pioneer roads and deer paths.I hiked the west route many times in the early and late eighties. The HHC has done a wonderful job with the improvements. They cut switchbacks and laid out a much more enjoyable route than the original. They deserve a lot of credit here!!! This is a very good trail and one you should check out. Many features of the trail make it one of Indiana's greatest trails. The exposed rock strata are among the oldest in the state: 600-million year old Ordovician fossils are exposed at every tiny draw the trail crosses. Contours are severe and the soil is poor, so the trail winds and changes grades frequently to avoid impassably steep slopes. This results in some magnificent views of the reservoir from on high as well as some memorable dips to the shoreline.

The west part of the loop consists of 11 miles (this mileage is in debate!!) of challenging trail in the road less, backcountry area of Brookville Lake. This area has a lot of blow downs on the trail and can be weedy (Stinging Nettles) down by the creeks in mid summer. Large mature hardwoods are found in quantity and cedars dot the hillsides where ever they can find a hold. Expect Deer flies, ticks and chiggers May through mid July, but hardly any misquotes ever!!
