trips - Mid State Trail IV LoversTrip Info
DescriptionThe Mid State Trail has proven to be one of the geatest seldom-trodden treasures in the State of PA. This is a make-up of a section I missed when I had to go play in the snow elsewhere. I have not hiked this section yet, but will be following maps provided with the MST Trail Guide. This section may not be in the Rothrock State Forest, but I forgot to bring my guide to work today. You can find a trip log for this section on the neohbackpackingclub.com site. We will camp around 2 AM on Friday night, if not a minute or two earlier, after spotting cars and hiking in to our first site. You will also be ready to hit the trail at 9 AM each morning. Our mileage for Saturday is longer than the original trip because we will not be hiking in snow - so our Saturday PM camp site will be around Libby/Liddy Run. Currently, the only other participants are from Ohio - so I am planning to meet them (and my girlfriend) in Hermitage, PA. The meeting point can flex, based on the origin of the participants. But you are also welcome to rendezvous at the Eutaw House at Route 322 and 144 east of Boalsburg, PA. I'd like to reach our destination trailhead at Poe Paddy State Park by Midnight on Friday, May 4th. We will leave a vehicle or two there and drive up to our northern trailhead at RB Winter State Park on PA 192. We will spend Friday night at a campsite about 3 km into the hike south of RB Winter State Park after night-hiking in (bring batteries for that headlamp!). Saturday will be a 17 mile day and Sunday a 9 mile day because we will have knocked off a couple of miles Friday night. The terrain varies and I can email you an elevation profile if you want to see it. There is a detour of the last climb available with parking around Mile 24 if you need to utilize it. If you are really really curious, I suggest that you order the Mid State Trail Guide from the Mid State Trail Association (Google them). There will be plenty of water available on this hike. Snowy weather itinerary: We won't need one!!! I am using the Mid-State Trail Association's 10th edition Guide to Mid State Trail in the Seven Mountains of PA and it's accompanying maps.
