trips - Deep Woods To White WaterTrip Info
DescriptionHere are the directions to get to the trailhead: It turns out that the Road to get to Fayette Station (Kaymoor Trial Trailhead) is a one-way road. You will need to access this road only at the New River Gorge Canyon Visitor Center. If you use the other access you will have to turn around and head back!! It is right off of 19 on the north side of the New River Gorge Bridge. You really can’t miss it as it is very well marked. Stay on this road and proceed with caution (Watch out for Stupids Curve, well marked and a good spot to take a funny pic of the sign) The road is very curvy and has a lot of good places to take some good pics. There are some turn offs after this curve, just stay to the main road and keep going down hill, you’ll be fine !! Go all the way to the river, you will cross an old iron trestle bridge and then come to the parking lot of Fayette Station (on the river) You will see where the rafting outfitters take out the rafts. Continue uphill and you will come to the Kaymoor trailhead parking lot. It is well marked and you will be able to see a real nice foot bridge from the trailhead. (See the pic in the trip album) Basically the trip is a 10.82-mile hike and then a return White Water Rafting Trip. The proposed plans is as follows: 1.On Saturday, 7/28/2007, we would start at Fayette Station, under the New River Gorge Bridge and hike upstream along the Kaymoor Trail to Kaymoor Top. From there we would continue on the Cunard To Kaymoor Trail. We would camp Saturday night in the woods above the river at one of the primitive campsites along the route. The mileage for Saturday would be close to 8 miles depending on where we decide to camp. 2.On Sunday, 7/29/2007, we would hike the remainder of the Cunard To Kaymoor Trail upstream to Cunard, where we will meet up with an White Water Rafting outfitter http://www.songerwhitewater.com/ and load our gear on their bus and then raft back down to where we started the hike. The outfitter will meet us there with our gear. The Outfitter on the rafting trip provides a lunch included with the price of the trip. The rafting part of the trip will take close to three hours. Please see the Trail map and Elevation profile in the trip album for more information. 3.The cost of the Rafting trip is $71.99 per person. Here is a link to the reservation part of the outfitters website. It has important information on deadlines, cancellation fees, etc http://www.songerwhitewater.com/reservations.htm We need to have the reservations in by 7/06/2007 in order to book the raft trip. I will email and post a reservation number on a later date that you need to refer to when making the reservations. The proposed route is a moderate to rugged long trail in the New River Gorge National River located close to Fayetteville West Virginia. You need to be in good physical condidtion for this hike!! While it’s not a total wilderness trek, it does provide one with a mix of pleasant woods walking, spectacular views and a chance to study some industrial history at the remains of an old logging operation at Kaymoor and the old coal mines located there. The trails are mostly well-groomed and smooth, but there are some challenging climbs and a few washouts that will have to be crossed during the hike. There is a set of 800 steps that will have to be ascended leading to the coke ovens and remains at Kaymoor Top. You can bypass this climb and stay on the river route (Kaymoor trail) if you choose. Signage is a problem. There are quite a few places where they have been pulled up and a couple of other places the signs are a bit misleading. Make sure you bring a map and a good sense of direction with you and you’ll be OK. The route includes 4 to 5 miles of forest road walking, the first two of which might be boring unless you’re into wildflowers and doing the hike in the spring or summer! Here are some additional links that have some good pics and information about the area: http://www.nps.gov/neri/index.htm http://www.worldisround.com/articles/34462/ http://www.worldisround.com/articles/308353/index.html http://www.midatlantichikes.com/id192.html http://www.songerwhitewater.com/ Here is a link to purcahse a map. http://www.ngmapstore.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=273&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=134&iSubCat=137&iProductID=273 I have made the initial reservation for the rafting trip on Sunday, July 29, 2007. If you are going you need to call 1-800-356-7238 or go to http://www.songerwhitewater.com/ and make your reservation/payment. You will need to reference this reservation number, 27994, when paying for your trip. The cost of the trip is $71.99 per person (That’s the complete total). We have not decided exactly when the rafting trip will be scheduled to start as of yet. I am working towards starting the rafting trip close to 10:00 AM Local time. If you are planning on arriving on Saturday morning, 7/28/2007, and not camping at http://www.songerwhitewater.com/ on Friday night, 7/27/2007 you will need to specify chest sizes for all persons going prior to the trip, so that the people at Songer will have the right size PFD for everyone when we meet them at the put in site. That would be best done by phone!!! Those of us arriving Friday can try on PFDs , pick out paddles, Etc, Etc, at that time. You will need to sign a wavier and those can be downloaded here: http://www.songerwhitewater.com/downloads.htm Fill these out and bring them with you when you hike. I will have some extras, and the bus driver will have some as well. Anyone else interested can, of course, join the trip and make their reservation after the 7/06/2007 deadline. We just need to have at least five by then. See ya later. Randall
