trips - Knobstone Thru HikeTrip Info
DescriptionThe plan will be to meet at the Deam Lake Trail Head late on the night of the 13th, or very early on the 14 to start out. We will hike North bound to the Spurgeon Hollow trail head. It is 43.5 miles and I would like to finish it up by the afternoon of the 16th. The Knobstone is the longest and most difficult trail in Indiana, and there is little to no water on this trail so we will need to cache water at the road crossings. I plan on doing this on my way down on Saturday night. If there is anyone from down south coming I would be willing to leave water for them too to save them a lot of driving. I will also need at least one vehicle to help set up the shuttle, so if there is someone coming from the Indy area on Sat. night that would be ideal. The idea is to finish it as fast as possible, so this will not be a drinking-fest, and you will need to be in pretty decent shape. This trail is not like most Indiana trails. The hills are steep, and we will be shooting for 15+ miles per day. Since designated campsites are not required we can just go till the group decides to stop each day. There are no permits or fees required for this trip, though the DNR does ask that you register with them as a courtesy. Map info: Maps can be purchased at the DNR customer service center by calling 317-232-4180. The maps are $4.00 each and includes shipping. They are 24" X 36" on waterproof paper and are printed in full color. Maps can also be purchased near the trail at Clark State Forest and Jackson Washington State Forest., and Delaney Park Here is a link to the DNR page: http://www.in.gov/dnr/knobstone/index.htm
