trips - Indian Staircase, Hanson's Point and Auxier RTrip Info
DescriptionFriday night: Take Highway 715 (past Koomer Ridge Campground) to ANGELS WINDOW parking area. There is a trail directly across the road which is not marked. That is Swiftcreek Trail. Hike in appx 1/4 mile, or less, and look for a campsite on the right about 400 feet off the trail. Nice, quiet and moderately secluded campsite with no road noise. If you are coming in late, it will be easy to find. If you look at the map, you will see the trail head for Swiftcreek is further up the road, do not park there. Park at Angels Window for a short walk in. Saturday morning: Indian Staircase. If you have never been there, you are in for a real treat. It is a semi-streneous hike in about 1 mile to the bottom of the staircase where you will climb up the side of the rock. There is also an alternate Indian Trail Bypass Trail where there is no climbing but the trail is still semi-streneous. Bring only daypacks. How about lunch on top somewhere with a breathtaking view. Then hike out appx 2 easy miles with some neat stuff on the way. Saturday afternoon: hike in to Hansen's Point and camp. This is about a 2.5 to 3 mile hike in. If you have never been there, absolutely breathtaking. Be prepared for a beautiful sunset and sunrise (if you're up) and really nice campsites. Sunday morning, for whoever wants, Auxier Ridge. It should be on the verge of some beautiful colors. WATER: There is no water at the Friday night campsite, but you are close enough to your car, that should not matter. There is no water at Hansen's Point. You will need to carry enough for Saturday evening and Sunday morning. If we have time, maybe Miguel's between the two hikes on Saturday, or Sunday on the way out. The weather is supposed to around 70 for Friday - Sunday with lows in the upper 40's, and no rain. If you are arriving Saturday morning,we will meet at the Angels Window Parking lot no later than 9 AM. Please let me know you are coming so we will wait for you. You will need to have a car pass in your vehicle to park in RRG. You can buy these at the Shell station in Slade. You also can purchase maps there as well. Call the Stanton District Office (of the Daniel Boone National Forest) for information and maps at (606) 663-2852.
