trips - Red River Gorge - Courthouse RockTrip Info
DescriptionCLIMBING IS DANGEROUS: Climbing is inherently dangerous and the risk of death or serious injury can never be completely eliminated. It is up to each individual to make his or her own choices regarding acceptable risk. By signing up for this trip you acknowledge that you recognize these risks and are prepared to be responsible for your own safety. Friday Arrival and first nights camp. I will be spending the night at one of the primitive camping areas along Tunnel Ridge Road. I will be arriving late. Auxier Ridge Trail will be close at hand from here. Saturday: From parking area take Auxier Ridge Trail (#204) 1.8 miles along ridge. When trail ends and becomes rock, scramble down to the left or rappel to the base. * Climb "Auxier Chimney" (5.5 trad route, 90 feet) - "This line ascends the large rock in the southwest corner of the ridge near Haystack Rock. To descend, follow the approach-scramble or rappel from a tree." >> Return to ridge. Hike to Haystack Rock. Climb one or more of the following: * "Dirty Rastafarian Scoundrels" (5.6 trad route, 90 feet, 1 bolt... best rated) * "Girdle Traverse" (5.4 X trad route, 60 feet) * "Haystack" (5.3 R trad route, 40 feet) >> Hike to Courthouse Rock * One person lead climbs "Standard Route" (4th class trad route, 70 feet) * Fix anchors at "Standard Route" and "East Ridge" * Others Climb "Standard Route" or "East Ridge" (5.5 X trad route, 90 feet) on top-rope. Haul gear up to top of Courthouse Rock, camp. No fire (no firewood) but what solitude and a great view! Sunday: Lower gear, rappel down. Hike out, return to cars. Perhaps score a good breakfast at Natural Bridge State Park (love those cat-head biscuits, red-eye gravy, and Kentucky ham!)
