trips - Fourth Annual Strawberry Jam At Bear HeavenTrip Info
DescriptionThe June Full Moon is also known as The Full Strawberry Moon to the Algonquin tribes. The full moon will be 7 June this year of 2009. This trip will be a car camping party and jam session with day hiking available in nearby Otter Creek Wilderness Area two miles away. There is an excellent swimming hole 4.5 miles down creek from the south/headwaters trail head. Spectacular Seneca Rocks is about a 25 miles drive to the east. There is a 3/4 mile trail to the top of The Rock and a short scramble takes you to the very top of The Rock. That point is close to 900 feet above the North Fork Of The South Branch Of The Potomac River. From there you look down on the village of Seneca Rocks(Jct Rt 33 & 28). Down there is a nice little restaurant where you can eat on the deck with The Rock looming just to the east. Bring guitars and banjos and fiddles and any other kind of instruments and we will see what sort of caterwauling we can do. Perhaps we can have one of our infamous Trail Talk Cook-Offs as well. There is a "rock city" a short walk west from the campground and other amazing rocks to the east that are great for scrambling. http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/mnf/rec/rog_campgrounds/bearheaven_campground.htm Bear Heaven is in the Monongahela National Forest and is a lovely spot to relax in the shade of tall hardwoods on a ridge with decent breezes even on hot days. The town of Elkins is about fourteen miles away with grocery stores and places to eat. I will head out there on the evening of 4 June to secure as many campsites as are needed.
