trips - Hemphill Bald and Cataloochie AreaTrip Info
DescriptionTwo Day Itinerary for your consideration Meet at GSMNP's Balsam Mountain campground Friday afternoon/night, and start at Polls Gap the next morning. Saturday Hemphill Bald Trail: This moderate low ridge trail ascends 1,800 feet in 8.5 miles. The trail starts fairly level at Polls Gap but begins to climb steeply on switchbacks after Maggot Spring (the last reliable water source before CS #41) and until Hemphill Bald. If it is clear, we will experience some of the most spectacular views in western North Carolina as we hike through this section. There are several superb lookouts, most notably a view east from Hemphill Bald. Double Gap, and then overnight at CS #41: The site offers many camping areas, either under shady hemlocks or out in the open at the former homesite. Explore the area, looking for signs of the early pioneers. Leave all artifacts in their place, as they comprise a living archaeological exhibit. Sunday Caldwell Fork Trail: The prettiest sections this end of the trail near three exceptionally large poplars, which are believed to be among the largest in the Park. (The largest of the three requires the outstretched and connected arms of six people to encircle the trunk, which is eight feet in diameter.) Big Fork Ridge Trail: This low ridge trail links Caldwell Fork and Rough Fork in the middle of Cataloochee Valley. Crossing the low ridge separating these two parallel creeks and trails, you will hike a moderate, 3-mile stretch. Rough Fork Trail: This lower creek trail begins by following a stream along a gravel road for a couple of miles and then passes several restored farm houses. The middle section of the trail becomes a narrow footpath, travels through impressive forest to a side ridge. Lunch at CS #40 Rough Fork Trail: The trail then follows a wide railroad grade for several miles to Polls Gap and is very gradual and makes a wonderful, short hike out. (Please note that there is no water after Campsite #40.) *********************************************** (I found out that Mile high Campground will not open till May 15th this year.)
