trips - Sods in the DollyTrip Info
DescriptionI posted the following trip on www.neohbackpackingclub.com I will leave from Pittsburgh on Friday the 18th after work. Here is a link to the map I am using: http://www.lrh.usace.army.mil/_dollysods/DollySods_map2.pdf Local snow reports are here: http://whitegrass.com/report.html Friday January 18th – Park at mouth of Red Creek in Laneville, WV where Laneville Road (SR 45) ends and FR 19 begins. SR 45 crosses over Red Creek and there are parking areas on the sides of the road next to the crossing. Hike in Red Creek Trail (TR514) approximately 0.6 mile upstream to campsites in vicinity of intersection with Little Stonecoal Trail (TR552). Saturday January 19th – Continue upstream on Red Creek Trail (TR514) to Blackbird Knob Trail (TR511) west to Left Fork of Red Creek. Camp is along the creek just north of where the trail crosses. The sites are within thick spruce groves within 100 yards of the trail intersection. This route is approximately 6.5 miles in length. Sunday January 20th – Hike west on Blackbird Knob Trail (TR511) to Rocky Ridge (TR 524) then southeast on Big Stonecoal Trail (TR513) to campsite near intersection with Dunkenbarger Trail (TR 558). Slackpack trip on Rocky Point Trail (TR554) to Lions Head vista and then return. This route is approximately 9 miles. From www.midatlantichikes.com (Thanks Mike) Day 2: Side Trip to the Lion’s Head: From the campsite, sans packs but with cameras, snacks and water in hand, travel downstream on Big Stone Coal Trail. Cross the run at 0.16 miles. Visit the waterfall on your right. In another 0.56 miles or so Big Stone Coal trail will veer to the right and downhill at the junction with Rocky Point Trail. You want to go straight on Rocky Point Trail, crossing through a rocky area marked by cairns and a very small part-time stream that crosses the trail. At 0.5 miles from the last trail junction and about 5 minutes from the small stream, look for a large cairn on your left. There is a labyrinth of trails here. All will eventually get you to the top but the best one is to the right. You’ll have to step up onto the rocks from the trail. Watch out for the crevices and snakes as you explore the area. On the eastern edge of the rocks you’ll find cairns that will lead you down through a large fissure in the rocks and reconnect you to the unofficial trail. Follow it back down to Rocky point Tr and retrace your steps back to the junction of Big Stonecoal and Dunkenbarger Trails. Monday January 21st – Continue on Dunkenbarger Trail to Little Stonecoal Trail (TR552) then return to vehicles on Red Creek Trail (TR514). This is only about 3.5 miles. Lunch at Sirianni’s Pizza in Davis, WV. You must have snowshoes for this trip. Yes, snowshoes. If there is significant snow, then the route will change to adopt 6 to 7 mile days. The last day will still be the shortest. If there is no snow then you will be carrying snowshoes. Did I mention snowshoes?? Be prepared for a few wet (knee deep) stream crossings along Red Creek. More rain and snowmelt could increase the water level, but that is part of the adventure.
