trips - MST Jo Hays to Greenwood - The Early CrowdTrip Info
DescriptionThe description below is shamelessly copied from jmitch's trip posting for same area a week later. Our group will camp in the Beaver Pond area on Friday and plan for Detweiler Run area Saturday. We'll either wake up relatively early or take a short cut to make up the difference between other groups' itineraries. Confirmed ice/snow on the Tussey Mountain rocks will cancel this trip or redirect it to the A.T. depending on what the group wants. This is a cross forum outing with one confirmed participant from backpacker.com already. Description: We'll need to shuttle, which is quick and easy. We'll meet at Greenwood Furnace State Park and shuttle to the beginning of the hike. http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/greenwoodfurnace.aspx This is a superb trail. highlights: views, views, views...part of this is a ridgetop trail with rocky terrain and numerous awesome vistas. indian wells vista is incredible. 4 incredible natural area- big laurel flat, bear meadows, detweiler, and alan seeger. each of these places are awesome. expect scenic streams, great camping, rhododendron tunnels, and old growth forest. Alan Seeger Natural Area is very beautiful with rhododendron jungles and old growth hemlock. We'll finish at Greenwood Furnace State Park, with old stack iron furnaces and lots of history. The trail is rugged and somewhat difficult, there is a big climb on Sunday after Alan Seeger Natural Area.
