trips - Seneca Creek BackcountryTrip Info
DescriptionSeneca Creek/High Meadows Loop, route originally published in "Day and Overnight Hikes in the Monongahela National Forest." A moderate 13.5 mile loop, two night overnight that takes you up Seneca Creek to a walk-up campsite, traverses a ridge in the Allegheny Mountains, then comes down by way of an old logging road. There are waterfalls to see and play in, and the second night camps in a meadow. From the first night camp in the Judy Springs Site, there are a number of short trails that can be explored to lengthen the trip. the campsite is only a few miles in, so there should be plenty of time to get there & set up camp after the Via on Saturday. The second day we can explore from the campsite or push on. There are a few river crossings and the logging trail is reported to be rather muddy. Bring extra socks. Plenty of water available, bring a filter or tabs. We may be able to build a fire, even. It looks like dogs are welcome in the backcountry of West Virginia and I know mine would love to come. Looking into it. This will be a fairly easy hike; beginners welcome! The second day has an elevation gain of about 1000 feet over about 5 miles, down and back up a gorge. the first and third days are mostly downhill. If we have more than 12 people interested, another group may go the reverse direction and be finished sunday evening so they can rock climb on monday. Bring your own food. Gear is probably available to share, discuss here if you're interested :) The loop starts and ends at the same trailhead! No switching cars! This is a trip with my Philadelphia-based adventure group; carpools from Philly and anywhere along the way welcome. Love to meet other hikers, Most of us will be staying Friday night in Seneca Shadows Campground ($8 fee, limited space), then do the Via Ferrata on Saturday morning. We'll head out into the backcountry after that; probably around threeish. If you don't want to do the Via you can probably start out early & set up camp & explore, or hike the 30 miles of trails in Nelson Rocks Preserve until the rest of us are finished. http://adventurers.meetup.com/47/calendar/7564952
