DescriptionHere is the link to descriptions of road closures important in getting cars to Kingston Lake. In short, access will be by M-77 to Grand Marais and west on 58; the usual routes are, and will be, closed. (Thanks to Cow Patty!) BACKPACKING CAN BE DANGEROUS: This hike is inherently dangerous and the risk of death or serious injury can never be completely eliminated. It is up to each individual to make his or her own choices regarding acceptable risk. By signing up for this trip you acknowledge that you recognize these risks and are prepared to be responsible for your own safety. You should feel comfortable hiking 9 miles per day in variable trail conditions and with the possibility of poor weather. Fox River Pathway The Fox River Pathway is a hiking trail that runs from Seney Township Campground in Seney, to Kingston Lake State Forest Campground off H58 near southern edge of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore ... 27.5 Miles. This trail is isolated, and is rated Moderate to Difficult; not recommended for casual hikers. Once you are out in the middle of this, you are there for the duration. Check out this map of the trail before you hike it. This is considered to be a three-day hike for experienced hikers, and takes you through the famous Fox River country immortalized by Ernest Hemingway in his story "Big Two Heart". (As the story goes, Papa Hemingway didn't want to give away the location of the trout stream he fished, so he re-named it after a stream twenty-five miles to the northeast.) The section between Kingston Lake and the Fox River Campground is serious outback. This is some of the most remote backcountry that the Lake Superior State Forest and the Upper Peninsula has to offer. The trail is also open to mountain biking and cross-country skiing, but it is not groomed. There is an easy 4-mile section of trail that leads from Kingston Lake Campground to Twelve Mile Beach in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This section of trail is not part of the Fox River Pathway. The route for this trip does NOT cover this section of trail. Logistics for 27.5 miles over 3 days, 3 or 4 nights: Friday, October 3rd: Converge at Seney Township Campground (5 miles N of Seney on Co Rd 450) for overnight car camping. Stage Shuttle at Kingston Lake State Forest Campground off H58 near southern edge of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, about 4 miles south of Twelvemile Beach. Saturday, October 4th: Hike, Camp. Try to get in about 9-10 miles. Sunday, October 5th: Hike, Camp. Try to get in about 9-10 miles. Monday, October 6th: Hike out to Kingston Lake state forest campground off H58. This should be a hike of between 7 to 9 miles depending on the prior two days progress. Camp or depart based on your desire and schedule. This is a collection of short stories and if you have done little or no reading of his works this is a great place to start. MAP This is a really good map that might be good to print out.
