trips - Historical Hiking!Trip Info
DescriptionYellow River State Forest / Effigy Mounds TRIP Oct. 10-12 Check out beautiful Northeast Iowa near the Mississippi River on a backpacking trip Oct. 10-12! This will be a "sequel" to a trip held in 2005, where we not only did the backpacking thing at Yellow River, but also carpooled Saturday night to go to the MOONLIGHT HIKE at Effigy Mounds National Monument, about 10 miles away. That hike is a lot of fun, featuring superb views of the rivers in the moonlight and also a chance to "meet" historical characters of the area. Here is more information about the hike: October 11: Moonlight Hike: Effigy Mounds National Monument, three miles north of Marquette, IA. Presented annually, these popular activities can include walks along the Yellow River Bridge Boardwalk Trail and hikes along the Fire Point Trail to the top of the bluff. Featured are: Effigy mound building culture, the impact of the historic settlement period and moonlit views of the Mississippi and Yellow Rivers, reservations required, 563-873-3491. FREE. Those of you who have gone on YRSF hikes know it's a great site, where you can strategically locate cars at bail-out points and with food, water and more (Dutch ovens??)(favorite beverages, although a drunken mess is NOT what we're about!!!) Please contact me at my e-mail, lisapbia at yahoo dot com, if you want to participate, or to get more details. I'll create an e-mail list from those interested.
