trips - Adena Trace Float /HikeTripTrip Info
DescriptionMe and Attilla are planning on floating in on this one and camping on the West Side Saturday night about two miles north of the Dam. Here are the confirmed GPS coordinates for Saturday nights campsite: N39 27 06.4 W84 59 59.9 We will meet at Garr Hill Ramp at 10:00 AM local time. You can use the below address on Yahoo Maps to get ya close: Garr Hill Bait and Storage 8035 Pea Ridge Road Brookville, Indiana 47012 This will get you to the intersection of Pea Ridge Road and Indiana 101. When you get to the intersection of Indiana 101 and Pea Ridge Road, the east side of the intersection has a sign stating Pea Ridge Road, however the west side was has a sign stating Garr Hill Road. (The sign is not that good) You need to go west on Garr Hill Road, past the Garr Hill Bait and Storage. Pea Ridge Road will veer off to the left about a half mile from the intersection. Stay on Garr Hill Road until you come to the Boat Ramp. Confirmed GPS coordinates of the Saturday morning put in are : N 39 degrees 28.815 minutes W 84 degrees 57.662 minutes I will post a map with the Saturday night campsite location marked in Yellow and I have posted the GPS Coordinates for the same above!! The Adena Trace trail runs within 200 yards of this campsite. If you wanna hike in, I would suggest that you start at the Brookville Dam. Hit the trailhead at the west corner of the dam and head north along the lake shore. There is good fishing from the Dam to Fairfield Causeway, so bring your poles and some crawlers! On Sunday you could either continue on to Fairfield causeway and drive back from there or turn around and hike out the same way you came in. You really have a lot of options as to where you start. Since I won’t be hiking this trip, I’ll leave it up to you!! Here are some links to info about the trail! http://www.hoosierhikerscouncil.org/Trail_Work/adena.shtml http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/properties/res_brookville.html The Adena Trail is single use 24-mile loop hiking trail located at Brookville Reservoir, 30 miles south of Richmond, Indiana and 30 miles north of Cincinnati. The Hoosier Hiking (HHC) Council was invited to design and build the Adena Trail. However, it should be noted that the majority of the west side of this trail existed in the form of pioneer roads and deer paths. I hiked the west route many times in the early and late eighties. The HHC has done a wonderful job with the improvements. They cut switchbacks and laid out a much more enjoyable route than the original. They deserve a lot of credit here!!! This is a very good trail and one you should check out. Many features of the trail make it one of Indiana's greatest trails. The exposed rock strata are among the oldest in the state: 600-million year old Ordovician fossils are exposed at every tiny draw the trail crosses. Contours are severe and the soil is poor, so the trail winds and changes grades frequently to avoid impassably steep slopes. This results in some magnificent views of the reservoir from on high as well as some memorable dips to the shoreline. The west part of the loop consists of 11 miles of challenging trail in the road less, backcountry area of Brookville Lake. This area has a lot of blow downs on the trail and can be weedy down by the creeks in mid summer. Large mature hardwoods are found in quantity and cedars dot the hillsides where ever they can find a hold. Expect Deer flies, ticks and chiggers May through mid July, but hardly any misquotes ever!! “From Indianapolis take I 70 East to State Road one (Indiana 1). Take State Road one (Indiana 1) South to Brookville. In. The dam is just east of the State Road one (Indiana 1) and 101 intersection. (Ya can’t miss this one. If you do stop and ask anyone they all know where this is at) Park by the Picnic Shelter restrooms (there’s only one shelter) The trailhead is at the west corner, just 1/4 mile north of the top of the dam, just where the woods start!!” If you want to use any of the online mapping softwares (Mapquest or something like it) to find the dam and trailhead you should type in Brookville, In. and that will get ya your Dam directions, LOL. Here is a link to a pic of the Dam trail head. You can see the parking lot and the west corner of the dam where the woods start, that is where the trail head begins. http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?T=1&S=11&Z=16&X=1680&Y=10918&W=2&qs=%7cBrookville%7cIndiana%7c Ok here’s a link to the weather, if your interested. http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/USIN0128_f.html Here's some links to some pics on the Adena Trace Trail: http://good-times.webshots.com/album/567348010Clctmo http://good-times.webshots.com/album/563742218shXzAD The last thing I want to have happen is someone saying that I misrepresented important information. So here goes my CYA!!! 1.) BACKPACKING, CANOEING AND CAT FISHING SPORTS CAN BE DANGEROUS (Ya might get horned real bad!): This trip is inherently dangerous and the risk of death or serious injury can never be completely eliminated. It is up to each individual to make his or her own choices regarding acceptable risk. By signing up for this trip you acknowledge that you recognize these risks and are prepared to be responsible for your own safety. 2.) Officially, camping is not allowed on the Adeana Trace Trail!!! That’s right, not allowed!!! I have camped on this trail many times and boaters camp on the shores all the time as well. But, the official stance is that it is illegal. Consider yourself warned! 3.) Deer Bow season is in and there are people who hunt there, use caution and maybe some hunter orange when on the trail. See ya later. Randall”
