Description

People are welcome to join in for any part of the trip. Feel free to email me or post questions.

Trip Plan:

8/8 - travel day, gather in NH, pre-position car(s)with supplies.

8/9 Morning start at Grafton Notch (mile #266.8 on the AT)

Stay at Campsite near Mahoosuc notch (273.9) 7.1 mile day.

After the first night on the trail, we will probably deviate from the plan at some point (I'll be looking for chances to gain a little on this schedule):

8/10 Gentian Pond shelter (286.1) no fee 12.2 day
includes Mahoosuc Notch @ 274 “AT’s hardest mile???

8/11 Rattle River Shelter (299.8) 13.7 mile day

8/12 Somewhere on the trail? (312) 12.2mile day

We should stop at the Carter Notch Hut and try to reserve space in the Dungeon at Lake of The Clouds – this can only be done 48 hours, or less, in advance. We could stay at Carter Notch Hut, but it costs 18$ and reservations are usually needed.

8/13 Osgood Tent Site: (323.8) 11.8 mile day

8/14 Lake of the Clouds/Dungeon (333.8 )10.0 mile day.

This requires advance reservations made within 48 hours and a fee (8$/person), but the location is worth it, given that there are very few safe and legal places to stay near or on the trail in the AT. This day starts with some strenuous hiking up to the presidential ridge and then to the peak of Mt. Washington.

8/15 Ethan Pond Campsite? (347.9) 14.1 mile day

8$ fee… Crawford Notch is currently closed due to construction and not due to re-open until September. Since this is a long day, we might prefer to stop somewhere before Ethan Pond. I’m not sure what the restrictions are (other than being 200 yards off the trail and ¼ mile from the designated site). There is also a state car campground not too far away – we might use this if we have a car stashed on the road (Rt. 302) or stop somewhere for re-supply.

Possible detour to Mt. Eisenhower

8/16 Guyot Campsite (356.9) 9.0 mile day

This campsite is .7 miles off the AT (I didn’t count that in the mileage, above) there is also a fee (8
dollars?) so we might want to look for a safe legal place before or after Guyot. There is also a
wonderful side trip from Guyot to West Bond, if the weather is nice, the view is amazing!
This is the kind of day where, if I was feeling good, I might decide to go for a long day – in this
case – to Garfield Ridge Campsite (for a 17.4 mile day) there is a fee, but it is only 100 yards off
the trail. Guyot is a downhill hike, so there is a climb to get back to the AT in the morning).

Possible detour
to Mt. Willey (1 mile) or even to Willey and Field (2.3 each way)

8/17 Liberty Springs Tentsite (370.1) 13.2 mile day.

Also 8$, but a great spring and right on the trail.

Possible 1.3 mile detour
leads to North Twin.

Possible 0.3 mile detour
leads to Mt. Liberty

8/18 Eliza Brook Shelter (381.5) 11.4 mile day.

8/19 Jeffers Brook Shelter (397.4) 15.9 mile day

8/20 Hexacuba Shelter (413.2) 15.8 miles

8/21 Moose Mountain Shelter (431.1) 17.9 miles

8/22. Norwich, Vt. (443.4) 12.3 mile day

total 176.6 AT miles
