Description

Well folks it's that time again for old and new friends to converge on the Ocala National Forest and hike the Florida National Scenic Trail.

Final Hike Info
Buckman lock to Grassy Pond Campground.

Meet at Grassy Pond Campground Friday about 9am and shuttle ourselves to Buckman Lock. Piped water is not available on the south side of the lock where we will start so be sure you are set for water before we shuttle.

Hike south along the Cross-Florida Barge Canal to Rodman Reservoir and camp. There are two spots for piped water along this section. The first is at Rodman Campground and the second is at Rodman Dam Boat Ramp. Water is also available from the reserviour.

Saturday hike south just past Lake Delancy campround and camp. This section is very dry and you will not have any opprotunities to get water untill Lake Delancy. Pump water is available at the Delancy campground.

Sunday hike south to our cars at Grassy Pond Campground and we shuttle those who drove us back to their cars.

Water
As I said, water is scarce along the trail and Ocla WILL KILL your filter. So be prepared to camel up when it is available. Water is available at the following locations.
First 5.5 miles CFB Canal (you pump)
Rodman Campground (piped)
Rodman Dam (piped)
Rodman Reservoir (you pump)
Penner Ponds (blue blaze, you pump, will be hard on filters)
Lake Delancy Campground (old school farm hand pump)
Lake Delancy (you pump, will be hard on filters)
Grassy Pond end of hike (old school farm hand pump)

Florida basics
Bugs- they shouldn't be bad but they will be active. The usual suspects ticks, chiggers and mosquitos
Snakes- If it is warm be aware of then possibility of eastern diamondback rattlers.
Bears- Yes, there are bears. If you see one you are very lucky as they never bother humans here and are very shy. I have never needed to bear bag in Ocala.
Sun- sunscreen or a hat is advised for the first day as there will be sun exposure along the canal.
Rednecks- Yeah Buddy we gots 'em. Be nice to them and they'll be nice to you.

supplies
Those coming by way of I75 Ocala has lots of options.
Those coming by way of I95 there is a Super Wal-mart at the Ormand Beach exit.
From Buckman Lock take SR19 north for 5 or so minutes and there is a Super Wal-mart in Palatka. Can't miss it.

Any questions? Just shout.
