trips - Isle Royale Mooseapalooza (v 1.1)Trip Info
DescriptionIf you join in afterwards, you're still welcome to come along; you'll just be on your own with transportation to/from the island. This hike will be a figure 8 loop in the northern (eastern) portion of the island, featuring the Greenstone Ridge, Todd Harbor, and Moskey Basin. This trip will be during the heart of Indian Summer, characterized by relatively warmer days and cooler nights, spectacular fall foliage, and of course, moose. We will be meeting at Copper Harbor on the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan and taking the Isle Royale Queen III across Lake Superior. The planned itenerary is as follows: Mon 20 Sep: Meet at Copper Harbor, MI in time to catch the 8:00 AM ferry to Rock Harbor. Arrive at Rock Harbor 12:30 PM, listen in on the Ranger briefing and hit the trail around 1:30 - 2:00 PM. Hike to Daisy Farm via the shoreline trail along Rock Harbor and camp at the Daisy Farm (Trail Mileage c. 6 miles) Tue 21 Sep: Hike to West Chickenbone Campsite on Chickenbone Lake via Mt Ojibway and camp at West Chickenbone. Mt Ojibway is supposed to have a climbable firetower with fantastic views of the entire island.(Trail Mileage c. 7 miles) Wed 22 Sep: Hike to Todd Harbor via Mt Siskiwit and Hatchet Lake and camp at Todd Harbor. With a little luck, we will have good weather and catch a spectacular sunset at Todd Harbor. (Trail Mileage c. 8 miles) Thu 23 Sep: Hike to Moskey Basin via McCargoe Cove, Chickenbone Lake, and Lake Richie and camp at Moskey Basin. (Trail Mileage c. 11 miles) Fri 24 Sep: Hike back to Rock Harbor along the shoreline trail of Rock Harbor via Daisy Farm and 3 Mile to catch the 3:00 PM ferry back to Copper Harbor, MI (Trail Mileage c. 9 miles) For Directions on how to get there, do a Mapquest search on COPPER HARBOR, MI. Boarding the Isle Royale Queen III will cost $50 per each adult each way and includes up to 100 lbs of freight per person. The National Parks Service (NPS) also charges $4 per person per day as indicated on the visitation permit. See websites posted below for details. Map of Isle Royale (Requires Adobe® Reader®) ![]() NOTE ON GROUP SIZE LIMITS IN ISLE ROYALE: The National Park has a group size limit of 6 people in order to be able to stay at the standard campgrounds. While I do not want to have to close this trip, if we do have more than 6 people going, I would ask that someone obtains a second permit for the park so we can officially exist as two separate groups. In that case, we should still be able to camp in the same areas, as I understand the park is not very crowded at the end of September.
