trips - Freeze Yer A$$ Off IVTrip Info
DescriptionPresident's Day weekend 2004- Newcomb Lake will be the location for our basecamp this year, in the 12,500 acre Santononi Preserve. Trailhead is off 28N, 0.3 miles West of the Town Hall in the Village of Newcomb. A small sign for the Santononi Preserve marks this road, which crosses a narrow iron bridge, passes the stone gatehouse on the R, and comes to a small parking area on the R at the top of the hill at 0.3 miles. Friday the 13th, depart from the trailhead. We will snowshoe 3.6 miles along winding woodland roads that are mostly flat – perfect for hauling gear sleds. Newcomb Lake is reached at mile 3.6, where we will turn L to follow the red-marked trail (136). This trail travels West, following along the Southern shore of the Lake. Follow red-marked trail for 1.2 miles, where we will branch to the right to follow blue markers 300 yards to the leanto. The leanto sits atop a rocky point, with a nice overlook of the lake. Things to do/see in the vicinity of our Basecamp: ·Dayhike along the red-marked trail to the far Western shore of Newcomb Lake. Proceed to the right to follow trail 137 along the Northern edge of the lake. One the far Eastern shore, reach The Great Santononi Camp, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The camp is a cluster of rustic log and stone buildings, which should make for some interesting exploration. Continue around the lake to complete the loop back at Basecamp. ·Moose Mountain Summit is nearby and has good views in all directions. The route is difficult to navigate and must be bushwhacked. In the past, trails existed, but have since grown over. From Basecamp, continue along the red-marked trail (136) toward Moose Pond. Shortly after the intersection with Trail 138 (old woods road) a deerpath may be visible heading up the ridge to the SW. ·Baldwin Mtn appears as a potentially strenuous-but-doable bushwhack to the South of Basecamp. No information was found on whether or not there are any views from this Summit. input welcome...anyone? Final day itinerary – follow red-marked trail East (back the way we came in) to the woods road (135) back to the trailhead. For those who have some time to play before heading back, Goodnow Mountain is a GREAT Dayhike to plan on. The trailhead is off 28N just West of the Hamlet of Newcomb (very close to where we will be for the main trailhead). The trail to the summit is just under 2 miles and not strenuous. The intact fire tower at the summit is enclosed with windows showing incredible views of 23 major peaks (on a clear day). Not to be missed! get ready!
