trips - HIKE MAINE IIITrip Info
DescriptionI normally collect emergency info for the Maine winter trips because it's required, but I think it's a good idea for the other trips as well. So closer to the trip I'll be asking for emergency contact info. LNT Baxter State Park We have three lean-tos at Chimney Pond in Baxter State Park for three nights. ($9 each to camp/night) There is also a gate fee of $10 or $13 for each non-resident vehicle. Can arrive my house Friday, August 13 if you like. August 14, Saturday please observe BSP rules Drive to BSP. Roads in BSP are typical back woods roads - dirt, winding (lol), and bumpy - and the speed limit is 20mph. We park at Roaring Brook, then backpack to Chimney Pond via the Chimney Pond trail. 3.3 miles, ~1,400 elevation gain. Time permitting we can take a short hike to Sandy Stream Pond to check for moose before we hike up. We must be on the Chimney Pond trail by 5pm. At Chimney Pond there are no open fires, no pets or electronics, no drinking in public (i.e. keep your alcohol in the lean-to). No wading or swimming in Chimney Pond, but there is a wash basin area where we can swim (no food or soap in the water). Drinking water comes from the pond. Outhouses are clean and have TP. There is a bear line for food bags. Any other questions, let me know! :) August 15, Sunday After making sacrifices to Pamola, hike Katahdin! August 16, Monday hike Katahdin! August 17, Tuesday hike down from Chimney Pond :( Can scoot out to Sandy Stream Pond again in case we haven't seen any moose yet. Can stop for pay showers at Hidden Springs campground, $3 each. Then on our way to Gulf Hagas! August 18, Wednesday Hike Gulf Hagas or something on the AT. Then on our way to the Bigelow Preserve August 19-22 HIKE MAINE! check out Katahdin trail descriptions on this site The Clark guidebook and map would be helpful to have. Anyone who doesn't want to buy the Stephen Clark guide book and map, send me your snail mail and I'll send photo copies of the map and guide for the area we'll be in. Please read the trail descriptions in order to determine which trail is best for you. Choices up the mountain from Chimney Pond are Dudley, Cathedral, Saddle, and Hamlin Ridge trails. Be prepared to carry all your water for Katahdin hikes once you leave Chimney Pond. Once on Katahdin, the Knife Edge and the North Peaks and Northwest Basin trails can be reached. If you're extremely ambitious you could incorporate the Abol or Hunt trails into your adventures. Other trails in the area include Pamola caves and the Blueberry Knoll. You can also bushwack and explore. Each hiker/group must sign in and out at the trail register at the ranger station before hiking. HIKE MAINE!!! =D
