trips - Mud and Bugs in the ADKsTrip Info
DescriptionThe Dix Range This will be a hike at the height of black fly season in the Adirondacks, so bring your bug repellant. The hope is to hit the mountains before all of the leaves have formed on the trees, so we will be offered longer and better views. Friday: Meet at parking area at the North Fork of the Bouquet River off of Route 73 near Keene Valley at 12:00pm. Hike in, to the South Fork and set up camp. There are a number of waterfalls and ledges we can climb along the way. Distance: about 3.0 miles Gain: 615 feet Loss: 18 feet Day 1 Map Saturday: Take down camp. Hike up East Dix via the Great Slide. From the summit of East Dix (4012ft), hike over to South Dix (4060ft), then over to Macomb (4405ft), back over South Dix, over Pough, then Hough (4400ft), and finally to the summit of Dix (4857ft). Take the Dix Trail down to the Bouquet valley and camp at or near the Bouquet River Lean-to. Distance: about 8.6 miles Gain: 4485 feet Loss: 4360 feet Day 2 Map Sunday: Take the Dix trail out to Route 73. Follow Route 73 back to the parking lot. Distance: about 5.4 miles Gain: 180 feet Loss: 1276 feet Day 3 Map Total Distance: about 17.0 miles Total Gain/Loss: 5280 feet Dix Range Info form the Adirondack Journey website *NOTE* This is not going to be an easy trip, most of which is on unmarked herd paths. Also, keep in mind that we will be carrying our packs over the range on day two, so pack light. There are no bailout trails to the Bouquet Valley from the range once we pass the col between East and South Dix. There is no place to get water once we begin to ascend the slide until we come down off of Dix just before we get to the lean-to. I plan on filling up a 3-liter platypus at the base of the slide. Despite the difficulty the rewards will be worth it. I would like to limit this trip to about 8 people, as the campsites are rather small and current DEC regulations limit overnight group sizes to 8. (update 3/28/04) - I would also suggest that everyone bring a set of crampons. As snow and ice is not all that uncommon that time of year at higher elevations. Directions to the trailhead: Coming from the south take I-87 and get off at Exit 30 (Lake Placid exit). Take a left onto Route 73. At about 2.1 miles you will come to Malfunction Junction where Route 9 meets 73. Go straight and stay on 73. At 1.5 miles you will come to a stone bridge (this will be the second bridge after Malfunction Junction) there is a small drive and parking area to the left immediately after you cross the bridge. Please note that there is no trail register here and the tail is unmarked. To get to the trail follow a small path that leads back to the road. Cross the bridge via the road and there is a trail on the other side to the right that leads to an illegal campsite. The trail that we will follow leads into the woods from here following the river upstream. See ”East Dix via Rte 73 and the Great Slide on East Dix” on the Adirondack Journey site.
