Description

Update (12/3/03)
As of Friday we had 8 going and now it's 2 or 3. The other person or two were going to have to do parts of the trip only. I need to get GPS coordinates for our Sipsey trip in March and it's the same distance from Birmingham to Sipsey as it is Cheaha, so we're changing.

I'll arrive at Thompson Creek and bushwhack into Quillen to get GPS coords of the campsite for the March trip. I'll drive over the the picnic area and camp about 1/4 mile up trail 209 on the right side of the trail. There is a decent sized campsite here. Friday night Dynamo and possibly MDS will arrive. Saturday morning Cocoa Williams will arrive. We'll drive over to Hurricane creek and explore that canyon looking for a 100' waterfall that BAMA has found. We'll camp somewhwre in the canyon Sat night. I need to be on the road by 11:30 on Sunday. The rest of folks can explore and leave when they want since shuttles won't be needed.

Old plan: This will be a 26/31 mile figure 8 route. There is a trailhead at the "top", "middle", and "bottom" of the 8. The majority of Saturday will be on the Pinhoti trail. It is pretty dry so provisions will be made to get water on Saturday afternoon.

Fri: Meet at 1 pm (CST) at the Cave creek trailhead close to the state park. A vehicle will be left here as a resupply with water, beer, or good food. This will be picked up Saturday afternoon. This parking lot represents the "top of the 8". After food is stored we'll drive to the parking lot adjacent to the Turnipseed hunters camp. This is maybe a 5 minute drive.

Hike 4 miles along the Chinnabee Silent trail until it intersects with the Skyway Trail. This will predominately be along a creek with some cascades along the way. Hike 4 miles along Skyway through typical southern pine forest. We'll get to camp after dark. Total mileage: 8 miles.

Sat: Hike last 2 miles of Skyway until intersection with Pinhoti at Adams Gap. From here on there probably won't be a water resupply except what is stored at the extra vehicle. It's about 5.5 miles to the intersection with the Silent Trail at the "middle of the 8". Once we arrive there anyone that wants to do lower mileage can continue around the top, left of the 8 and short circuit the route. The rest of us will go counter-clockwise until we get to the vehicle, pick up food, and meet the group of wimps at camp. This will put us camping on a western facing ridge. Hopefully, we'll get a good sunset. Total mileage 11/18 depending on route.

Sun: 5 miles back to the vehicles. Easy day.

Note: I have 5 local friends already committed. Friday night's campsite is pretty but cramped. Be forewarned that we may really need to spread out to fit multiple tents at the site.

Also, this route is a great opportunity to take good food/drink for a higher mileage type of trip.

Because there is a trailhead at Adams Gap folks can come in Friday night or Saturday morning and only be 2 miles from out campsite. If you come in Saturday morning, just wait at your vehicle and we'll be by around 9 or so and you can fall in line with the group.
