Description

Meet at Wolf Gap National Forest Recreation Area/Campground on Friday, 19 March.

We can decide to go north or south for this approximately 13-mile loop.

Big Schloss is two miles north of Wolf Gap and has a 360 degree view from about 3,000 feet on the state line.

Trout Run Valley lies to the west of Big Schloss and is 4-5 miles long and maybe a mile wide.

Long Mountain, at about 2,500 feet forms the western wall of Trout Run Valley.

North from Big Schloss the trail goes moderately uphill for about three miles to the top of Mill Mountain. Then its west on Half Moon Trail and down a mile or two to the bottom of the valley and across Trout Run.

Half Moon Lookout is the site of a fire tower and a nice side trip to a commanding view from the northern end of Trout Run Valley.

From the bottom of the valley its a rugged scramble UP and west to the northern end of Long Mountain.

Its several miles of bushwackin'/ridge-runnin' south along the top of Long Mountain to a forest road and a mile or so east to the trail to Tibbet Knob.

Tibbet Knob is about a mile north of the road at 3,000 feet and offers a view of Trout Run Valley from the south.

There are a few places to camp on Tibbet Knob among the pines and laurel and rocks.

Wolf Gap is 1.5 miles to the north.
