trips - Catskills LoopTrip Info
DescriptionWittenberg, Cornell, Slide, Giant Ledge Starting on Friday from Woodland Valley Campground and returning Sunday to Woodland Valley. This is a great 17 mile loop trail thru some very difficult terrain over 3 - 3500 club peaks. Slide 4180' tallest in the Catskills(views of 33 of the 3500' peaks), Wittenberg 3780' and Cornell 3860' I have chosen to do this trip in two nights, those of you that have hiked with me before know that I do not like to rush. The first night will be spent somewhere between Cornell Mtn and Slide Mtn, this location will be just below the 3500' no camp zone. I need to check on the water situation up there. (There are a couple of water sources close to this spot.)Saturday night will be spent on Giant Ledge. (People that can't make the trip on Friday could also park in Woodland valley and hike into Giant Ledge to meet us.) Giant Ledge offers vistas to both the NE and the SW giving great sunrise and sunset views. This trip is not for the faint of heart as the climbs are steep and in some spots I have heard that you are better off taking your pack off and lowering it on a rope. Winter conditions are still possible at the higher altitudes and crampons might be needed for ice. Quote from the 3500 Club "The climb from the east is one of the most challenging in the Catskills, as the red-blazed Slide Mountain Trail climbs over 3000 feet from Woodland Valley, passing over the summits of Wittenberg and Cornell. " DIRECTIONS TO WOODLAND VALLEY FROM NY THRUWAY NORTH BOUND Take the NY State Thru way to exit 19, then get on 28 west follow it until you get to Phoenicia, do not go into town you will see the turns to the right. Either right before the bridge or shortly after it you will see a sign for Woodland Valley State Park pointing to the left. I think it is East street, Should be a resturant on the corner this will take you across another bridge same river. There is a stop sign just over the bridge, make a right on woodland valley road. Follow this until you get to the end, almost. The "day" use parking will be on the right hand side across the street from the campground. Woodland valley road goes for quite a while and is very windy." I hope these are right. Makre sure you start the loop going the right direction. The trail is across the street and then across a foot bridge.
