trips - Sipsey Bushwack Part 4Trip Info
DescriptionUpdate (2/07/05): We're meeting at the TH for 208, NOT the rec area. 9am Central time. Map to the parking and camp site thanks to Slack: http://bensummers.com/bushwhack05.php Note that County Road 7 is really the trail. That road name is from before it was a Wilderness. Update (1/31/05): This picture is rotated 90* so that it keeps full resolution. Print it out in (2) 8.5x11's and it should work. If not, I can email you the full image. You will turn off 33 a mile or two north of Cty Rd 6. THe sign says something about a hunting area. From here it's a very curvy dirt road til the parking area. The parking area is in a switchback and has a TH sign. You will follow FT208 which is a horse trail. If you zoom in you'll see a horse symbol along with the word restricted. Below this text is the word "Braziel". I plan on us basecamping somewhere between the "R" in Restricted and the horse symbol to the NW. I seem to recall it being fairly flat there. I want to get away from any horse campers though, since we'll be basecamping. I'll tie about 3 pieces of orange surveyors tape to show where we leave the trail and then a piece of tape every 30 yards or so. TRIP PLAN I'll arrive around 9 on Friday morning. We'll hike the mile or so in. After setting up camp on Friday we'll explore the east side of the canyon for the remainder of the day. Saturday we'll explore the west side. Time permitting, we may try to tie into the Big Tree for folks that haven't been there before. Sunday we'll hike out as folks travel time dictates. I'm going to take a side trip to see Turkey Foot Falls before heading home. I feel like folks that come in Friday afternoon or evening can find us. If you arrive after dark then you'll probably want to hike a short way down 208, camp for the night, and then come in Sat morning. If you want to try to find us at night then I'll leave some glow dark type of material in the trees where we leave the trail. I doubt we're more than 100 yards off trail. Update (1/24/05): I'll lay out the specifics at the end of this week, but it looks like we're going to hike in about 2 miles and setup a basecamp. Bushwhacking in full gear sucks. Friday we'll hike to the head of the canyon and explore every side canyon on the right hand side. Saturday we'll explore every side canyon on the left hand side. Sunday we'll hike out. Update (10/25/04) I've had to move this trip up a week to the new date shown and change it to a 3 day trip. My sons b'day is 2/24. My wife wants the party on 3/5 because of other family conflicts on 2/26. I don't want to start the trip on Thur since that's his actual b'day. Sorry the trip got butchered a bit, but a daddy has to do what a daddy has to do. Original plan: 4 day bushwhacking trip to Braziel and Clifty Creeks. This will be an exploration trip with little to no prior recon to the area. We'll meet at the Sipsey Rec area, drive over to the trailhead and be off. I suspect we'll stay the first two nights at one location and the third night in the 2nd canyon. Particulars to come later. MDS and I bushwhacked a small part of this area in Dec '03 and it looks promising.
