trips - KNOBSTONE TRAIL, INDIANATrip Info
DescriptionThe Knobstone Trail follows the Knobstone Escarpment, narrow, flat topped ridges, averaging 300 feet above the farmlands to the east. The well marked trail goes through a mixed upland hardwood forest on State Property. On my last two trips on this trail, one in late March, 2002, the other in early June, 2003, wildflowers were abundant, water was available in all the creeks, and we encountered no other backpackers allowing for solitude. This trip utilizes the best four camping areas on the Knobstone Trail. Printable maps, directions, and information can be found at: http://www.in.gov/dnr/knobstone/ On Friday, April 23, 2004, meet at the [changed see below] Elk Creek Trail Head at 10:00 a.m. (EST) spotting cars and shuttling down to Deam Lake Trailhead. Deam Lake is in Clark County which is a different time zone, daylight savings time, one hour later than most of Indiana (EST), and 1 hour later than Chicago time (CDT). On the first day, hike 9.8 miles northbound from the southern terminus of the trail and camp on a high hill 500 feet higher than the valley to the south. From this campsite, on a clear day, you can see the skyline and night lights to Louisville 30 miles to the south. On the Saturday, hike 11.4 miles north and camp in a large bend of the North Branch of Big Ox Creek. On the Sunday, hike 10.25 miles and camp near the shores of Elk Creek Lake. Anyone wishing to take a partial hike can leave their car at Elk Creek Trailhead. On Monday, hike 8 miles and camp where the pine plantation meets a small stream loaded with geodes. On Tuesday, hike out the remaining 4 miles to the car that has been spotted. Drive back to Deam Lake to recover any cars. ADDED MARCH 31, 2004 & Corrected 4-20-04: Due to the number of persons hiking only to Elk Creek Lake on Sunday afternoon, we will meet Friday, at 10:00 a.m local time (EST) (11:00 a.m. EDT for southern most Indiana, or 10:00 a.m. (CDT Chicago) at ELK CREEK TRAILHEAD. Directions: I-65 south to Exit 29B Indiana Route 56. Go west on Indiana Route 56 towards Salem about 8 miles. Turn left southbound on Ratts Road at the large sign "Elk Creek Fishing Area". Follow this paved road just under two miles to the end of the parking lot. The final 1/2 mile is on Elk Creek Lake Road. We will shuttle to the beginning of the trail. Those joining in a hike to the northern end will do an additional shuttle Sunday night.
