trips - Unofficial Adirondack Buttkicker IIITrip Info
DescriptionI’ll try and fill in for Artex as best I can. Day one Friday: Hike into Lake Colden from the Upper Works trailhead and setup camp. There are a number of High Peaks in the vicinity. Hopefully we will be able to get a lean-to, but don’t count on one being open. Distance: about 5.3 miles Gain: 1275' Loss: 265' Day two Saturday: Follow the trail running along Opalescent River, and then up along to Lake Tear of the Clouds, then summit Mt. Skylight (maybe also summit Mt. Redfield and Gray Peak), then summit Marcy, head down the Van Hoevenberg Trail towards Indian Falls (the herd path for Tabletop is also close to Indian Falls), take the trail at Lake Arnold, and summit Mt. Colden and then hike back to camp. Distance: about 12 miles (15.5 miles w/ Redfield & Gray) Gain: 4645' (6440' w/ Redfield & Gray) Loss: 4645' (6440' w/ Redfield & Gray) Day three Sunday: Hike out via Cold Brook Pass (Iroquois Pass) and Indian Pass. Distance: about 8.5 miles Gain: 1755' Loss: 2775' **Please Note:** This area is a very popular camping area and as a result the bears in the area have become accustom to taking down bear bags. We WILL be visited by bears. I strongly suggest that everyone use a bear canister in this area. The bears have become masters at taking campers food even when properly hung. Canisters can be rented from the Mountaineer in Keene Valley and the Adirondack Loj in Keene. You may want to also check stores in your area as well. Rentals are about $5 per day.
