trips - Hawk Mountain ReturnsTrip Info
DescriptionI'll be camping out at Windsor Furnace Shelter on the AT since it's pretty close to the road on Friday night. I'm almost sure that Roam Around will also be camping out here as well. Plan to meet up at 9:00-9:30am on Saturday morning at Hawk Mt. visitor's center. We'll then shuttle some cars to the Pinnacle and start our hike there. Trek from the Pinnacle to Eckville Shelter right before we enter Hawk Mt. Sanctuary (there is no camping in the Sanctuary) and camp there Saturday night. Wake up Sunday morning and continue hiking into Hawk Mt. Sanctuary and back to visitor's center. There are various trails on Hawk Mt. from the AT so the routes can be discussed when we all meet up. I don't know what the AT trail is like near Hawk Mt., but Hawk Mt. itself involves a few bouldering spots and a lot of rock hopping. I have a map scanned on my computer, so if anyone would like to see it, e-mail me. Also, if you're coming on this trip and would like a contact number for Fri night/Sat morning, email me and I'll be more than happy to dish out my cell digits. Scorchess@aol.com www.hawkmountain.org As of 4/28/04: Okay, here's the scoop... Me, RoamAround, and Mapleleaf will be camping Fri night at Windsor Furnace Shelter on the AT near Hawk Mt. If anyone cares to join us, you can get to the shelter via Reservoir Road. We'll all meet up Sat morning between 9-9:30AM at Hawk Mt. visitor's center. We can pick up trail maps there of Hawk Mt. We'll shuttle half the cars to/near Blue Rocks Campground and head towards the Pinnacle on the AT via the Pinnacle Trail. We'll then continue on the AT towards Eckville Shelter where we'll camp Sat night. There is a water source (Gold Spring) a couple miles from the Pinnacle and another water source near Eckville Shelter. The map I have doesn't show any other water sources after Eckville, so we'll have to pack all the water we'll need into Hawk Mt. I don't ever recall seeing any water sources in my many treks to the Sanctuary. Anyway... we'll probably bear off the AT onto the River of Rocks trail and take that up to the ridge of Hawk Mt via the "i forget the name of the trail because I can't find my trail map..." sorry. That trail will lead us back to the visitor's center where we can shuttle back to the rest of the cars. I know trail admission is $5 for Hawk Mt visitors and free for members, but I've never come from the AT onto Hawk Mt, so not sure if you have to pay entering that way. Bring some moola just in case! Highest elevation is approximately 1600. Weather for this weekend looks fair, although every time I check it, it changes. If you want to keep looking it up, Hawk Mt is located in Kempton, PA: Friday (24 hours): Mix of sun and clouds. Highs in the upper 70s and lows in the mid 50s. Saturday (24 hours): Times of sun and clouds. Highs in the low 70s and lows in the upper 50s. Sunday (24 hours): A few thunderstorms possible. Highs in the upper 60s and lows in the upper 40s. I'd definitely bring rain gear just in case. ~Melissa (ScorchFire) Scorchess@aol.com
