trips - LAUREL HIGHLANDS HIKING TRAILTrip Info
DescriptionMeet Friday, May 21, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) at the Ohiopyle Trailhead at the southern end of the 70 mile Laurel Highlands Trail. Hike 6.3 miles (2,000 foot elevation gains over several hills) and spend the 1st night at the Ohiopyle Shelters. On Saturday, hike 12.2 miles and spend the night at the route 653 shelters. On Sunday, hike 14 miles to the Route 31 shelters, eating dinner at the restaurant 200 yards off Route 31. Anyone opting to hike just the week end can have a car spotted at the route 31 parking lot. On Monday, hike 14 miles to the Route 30 Shelters. On Tuesday, hike 10.5 miles to the Route 271 shelters. On Wednesday, hike 13.1 miles, mostly downhill, to the northern end of the trail at Seward, Pennsylvania. Each shelter area has a fireplace, non-flush toliets, and a water supply. Shelters space can be reserved at $4.00 per person, per night, for non-Pennsylvania residents, no more than 30 days in advance. Trail maps can be ordered from the Laurel Ridge State Park by calling 724-455-3744. Ron from Lansing Michigan and I are already committed to go on this trip.
