trips - Sodsfest 2K5: Dolly Sods ReloadedTrip Info
DescriptionIntended Route: Enter at Bear Rocks TH which is north of the Red Creek Campground. We will camp just past where the trail crosses Red Creek before going up hill. There are some campsites in this area. Second day we will hike Bear Rocks trail to Raven Ridge--supposedly Raven Ridge offers the best view in the park. From here head south down the Rocky Ridge Trail to the Harmon Knob Trail to the Blackbird knob trail. Blackbird Knob offers the second best view in the park. We will camp near Red Creek just past the Harmon Knob trail which you can take as a shortcut. We will camp EAST of Red Creek this time. The third and final day we will take Blackbird Knob trail out to Red Creek Campground where hopefully we can have some cars waiting for shuttle. I will have a car at each trailhead. There is an alternate trail to take out to see more of the high plains for those not in a hurry on Sunday. You can exit at the Beaver Dam trailhead or back at our original trailhad. Both are indicated on the map below. ![]() Print out this map and bring it with you. It is fairly accurate and easy to follow. Trekker John will be marking our first campsite with reflective O's as well as the trail for those hiking in at night on Friday. So far the headcount is about 13. See you there and be prepared to have a blast! To find Dolly Sods you can mapquest "Dolly Sods Wilderness, WV". I believe "Harman, WV" is the closest "city" to Dolly Sods. When driving out 33E to Harman you will come to a split in the road, make a left at the split and look for a sign for Dolly Sods Wilderness on the right. (I am quoting this from memory and I THINK that is correct). You will go down a farm/forest road for several miles looking for FS75 and the Red Creek Campground. head N on FS75 towards the campground, the Bear Rocks trailhead is past this 2.5 miles.
