trips - Weekend Among the PharaohsTrip Info
DescriptionMap of Pharoah Lake Wilderness Day-1 (Saturday): Hike into Pharaoh Lake from the Beaver Pond Road side. Following the tail along the north shore, hike out to the rocky peninsula on Pharaoh Lake. Back track 0.31 miles to the trail junction with the Pharaoh Mountain trail. Hike over Pharaoh Mountain. The rocky summit offers views of both the Adirondack High Peaks and Vermont's Green Mountains. Please note the final mile up to the summit climbs over 1200'. On the other side of Pharaoh Mountain we will follow the Short Swing Trail as it passes Glidden Marsh, Oxshoe Pond, Crab Pond, and Horseshoe Pond. Finally we will arrive at Lillypad Pond were we will camp at or near the lean-to there. Distance: 10.25 miles Gain: 2585' Loss: 2175' Day-2 (Sunday): From Lillypad Pond, hike past Rock Pond, Clear Pond, and Mud Pond, before dropping our packs to hike up Treadway Mountain. Treadway is a relatively easy climb as the trail ascends 800' over 1.9 miles. The summit is open rock and offers good views. From the junction with the Treadway Mountain Trail we will follow the Long Swing Trail as it goes past Grizzle Ocean before returning to Pharaoh Lake. We will follow the south shore of the lake. We will set up camp at one of the lean-tos along the shore. Distance: 12.4 miles Gain: 1555' Loss: 1750' Day-3 (Monday): Continue along the trail on the south shore until it meets up with the outlet of Pharaoh Lake. From the outlet follow the trail back to the trailhead. Distance: 3.0 miles Gain: 135' Loss: 375' Directions to the trailhead: Take I-87 to Exit 25 (Chestertown). Get onto route 8 and head east towards Brant Lake. Between 2.5 and 3 miles you will reach the outlet and dam for Brant Lake. The road will follow the lake shore for about 5 miles were you will take a left onto Palisades Rd. Follow Palisades Rd for about 1 mile and take the 5th right onto Beaver Pond Rd. Take the first right off of Beaver Pond Rd, after about 1.3 miles, onto Pharaoh Rd. The trailhead is at the end of the road. Pharaoh Rd is a poorly maintained (if at all) dirt road with many deep potholes. Four wheel drive isn’t necessary (unless we get a lot of rain), but a high ground clearance is. There are a number of parking areas along the road before it get real bad and we could park some cars there and take one or two other cars to the trailhead.
