trips - Black Mtn Crest and the Big Butt(kicker) fall tripTrip Info
DescriptionThis trip is a buttkicker! The Black Mtn Crest trail is regarded by Backpacker Magazine and many others as the hardest in the east. The trail from Bolens Creek trailhead to Celo Knob climbs about 3300 feet in about 4 miles. From there its another 4 and a half miles over steep jagged peaks through an over grown trail, across steep rock scrambles and knife edge ridge line to Deep Gap where we will camp the first night. The next day the trail is still very difficult, but it is more heavily traveled and not grown over on the way to Mt. Mitchell (highest peak in the east) After that it will be a strenous bushwack over Mt. Hallback and Mt. Gibbs to Potato Knob where we will take the MTS trail to Blackstock Knob and then find a place to camp near Balsam Gap. The final day we will hike the Big Butt trail which is apparently not nearly as difficult as the BMC but offers up awesome views of the Black Mtn Range. By the time we reach this trail we will be praying for easy hiking though. We could get some bad weather so be prepared for all conditions. It gets cold up there in October and can easily snow and the wind will be pounding. The falls leaves will be awesome!!! The views from the Crest trail are some of the best I've ever seen. It will make the butt kicking march worth it. Hopefully we will get views and not bad weather. Most of this hike is more than a mile above sea level. Elevation gain will be around 10,000 gained and lost over around 30 miles. Strong hikers only should sign up for this trip. day 1: I'd like to start in Bolens Creek again and climb to Celo Knob. Take the black mountain crest bushwack trail south to Deep Gap, camp. 9 miles 5000+ feet of elevation gain. day 2: continue south on the Crest trail to Mt. Mitchell. Bag Potato HillTake te Old Mitchell trail to Mt. Hallback and then take the manway up over Hallback, Mt. Gibbs, Clingmans Pk and Potato Knob. From there hike the Mtns to Sea trail towards Balsam Gap and camp somewhere around Blackstock Knob. 12 miles and around 3500+ feet of gain. day 3: hike down to Balsam Gap, get on the Big Butt trail (actual name lol) and hike towards Cane River Gap. 7 miles and 1000 feet of gain and 3000 feet of loss. here are my photo albums from previous trips in the area... http://community.webshots.com/album/123943353WgCQLZ http://community.webshots.com/album/124039701UzbFFc http://community.webshots.com/album/159624196vGHUCe Mt.
