Description

What better place to begin the quest for the Adirondack 46 than at the top? We will be hiking Mt Marcy, and for any of you who are not very familiar with the Adirondacks but would like to be, the planned route is a great Grand Tour of the High Peaks region.

We will meet at the Upper Works (North -- for Indian Pass and Calamity Brook) Trailhead at 8:00 AM on Saturday 7 August and head out on the Calamity Brook Trail up to the Flowed Lands and Lake Colden. Here we will turn up Opalescent Brook and set up camp at or near the Uphill Brook or Feldspar Brook Leantos -- this will be our base camp. The hike into base camp from the trailhead, though not at all strenuous (by ADK standards), is about 10 miles.

Depending on time, we could either spend the rest of the day just hanging around camp, or we could climb one of the many other peaks in the immediate vicinity (e.g., Redfield, Skylight, Cliff, Gray, Colden).

We will hike Mt Marcy the first thing Sunday morning via Feldspar Brook, Lake Tear of the Clouds, and the Four Corners. Hopefully it won't be too crowded, but I guess only time will tell. We will then return to camp via the same route, pack up, and head back to the trailhead via the same route as we came in on (about 10 miles slightly downhill).

Directions to Upper Works:
It's a bit tricky to find this place on Mapquest, being that it's absolutely nowhere near any town whatsoever, so here are the verbal directions:

I-87 to Exit 29 for Essex County Route 2 (herein called CR-2).

Take CR-2 West for 17 miles and turn right at Tahawus Rd. This turn is just before a railroad grade, so if you pass the remnants of a railroad crossing and reach NY-28N, you've gone too far.

Take Tahawus Rd North for about 1/4 mile where it will change into Lower Works Rd.

Take Lower Works Road for about 7 miles and turn left into Upper Works Rd.

Upper Works Rd becomes a gravel road almost immediately. Follow it about 2 miles to the end, where the dead end is a parking lot and the Upper Works North trailhead.

NOTE: You will actually pass 2 other trailheads on Upper Works Road -- one on the right for Mt Allen and Mt Adams and one on the left for the Santanonis. Be sure to pass these and proceed to the trailhead at the end of the road for Indian Pass and Calamity Brook.
