trips - Ramsey Cascade Manway To Appalachian Trail..Trip Info
DescriptionNOTE: Persons for this trip is limited by park regulations. Sorry, this trip is FULL. Meet at the large picnic shelter along Porter's Creek Rd, 0.5 miles past the turn off for Ramsay Prong or 0.5 miles before you reach the Porters Creek Trailhead no later than 7am Saturday morning. This trip is not for the novice. It is a butt-kicking off-trail loop that will start at Ramsey Cascades, and follow the watershed up to the AT. This path is documented in several books, but is an UNMAINTAINED trail in the Smokies. On the way up, not only will you see the 80' waterfall of the Cascades, but the legendary DrinkWater Pool, and the UPPER Cascades before finally reaching the AT at a point between Old Black and Guyot. We will rest at TriCorner Shelter on Saturday night. (Reservation is for 6 people) On Sunday, we will depart for the second leg of our trip, which won't put us out to where we started until Monday about lunch time. (If you can't get Monday off, you can just high-tail it out of the park to your favorite exit. Cosby would be an easy one day out from TriCorner.) The Sun/Mon section of this loop will follow the Buck fork watershed down.. putting up with numerous stream crossings, log jams, rhodendron, snakes -- who knows.. ;) but it ought to be a good time. Our destination Sunday night is a secluded rock shelter. Assuming all goes well, and we are resting Sunday night in a rock shelter somewhere between the Chapman lead and the Guyot spur, we have a short hike (4 hrs or so) out to our car on Monday morning.
