trips - REVENGE of the revenge on the Dix RangeTrip Info
DescriptionTrip Canceled To Be Continued with the Revenge X4. Third time is the charm. Group limit: 8 The Dix Range Friday night or Saturday Morning: Meet at the trailhead at North Fork of the Boquet River. Spot cars at the Round Pond trailhead. Saturday: Hike in, to the South Fork of the river. Follow the South Fork to the base of East Dix. Hike up East Dix via the Great Slide (I know which tributary to follow). From the summit of East Dix (4012ft), hike over to South Dix (4060ft), then over to Macomb (4405ft), back over South Dix, over Pough, then Hough (4400ft), and finally to the summit of Dix (4857ft). Take the Dix Trail down to the Boquet valley and camp at or near the Boquet River Lean-to. Distance: about 12.7 miles Gain: 5575 feet Loss: 4525 feet Dix Range Map Sunday: Take the Dix trail out to Route 73. Follow Route 73 back to the parking lot and possibly climb Noonmark Mountain on the way out. Distance: about 4.0 miles; about 5.9 miles with Noonmark Gain: 180 feet; 1460 feet with Noonmark Loss: 1276 feet; 2275 feet with Noonmark Total Distance: about 17.0 miles Total Gain: about 7035 feet Total Loss: about 6800 feet Dix Range Info form the Adirondack Journey website *NOTE* This is not going to be an easy trip, most of which is on unmarked herd paths on rugged terrain. The climb up the East Dix slide accounts for about 850’ of elevation on a 32 to 35 degree slope on open rock. The climb is fairly tame when the slide is dry and is a lot of fun to climb. It is when it is wet and raining where the slide can be scary. Also, keep in mind that we will be carrying our FULL packs over the range, so pack light. There are no bailout trails to the Boquet Valley from the range once we pass the col between East and South Dix. The only bailouts are to the Elk Lake side, which will place us about 20+ miles from our cars. There is no place to get water once we begin to ascend the slide until we come down off of Dix just before we get to the lean-to. Plan on carrying up a least 3-liters over the range. Our last water source will be at the base of the slide. Despite the difficulty the rewards will be worth it. I would like to limit this trip to about 8 people, as the campsites are rather small and current DEC regulations limit overnight group sizes to 8. Directions to the trailhead: Coming from the south take I-87 and get off at Exit 30 (Lake Placid exit). Take a left onto Route 73. After going under the overpass there will be a large pull off on the left hand side of the road. This is where we can meet up if you feel you can't find the trailhead. Please let me know if you plan to meet here. At about 2.1 miles you will come to Malfunction Junction (you will know it when you see it) where Route 9 meets 73. Go straight and stay on 73. At 1.5 miles you will come to a stone bridge (this will be the second bridge after Malfunction Junction) there is a small drive and parking area to the left immediately after you cross the bridge. Please note that there is no trail register or sign here and the tail is unmarked. To get to the trail follow a small path that leads back to the road. Cross the bridge via the road and there is a trail on the other side to the right that leads to an illegal campsite. The trail that we will follow leads into the woods from here following the river upstream. See ”East Dix via Rte 73 and the Great Slide on East Dix” on the Adirondack Journey site.
