trips - Winterfest 2005Trip Info
DescriptionWinterfest 2005 is moving. Because of the storm coming in on Thursday and the road to Bunny Flat being closed (It's been closed for the last 4 days), we will now be camped at McBride Springs, about 4 miles from the City of Mt Shasta, on the way to Bunny Flat. Icsodiver (Bob) was kind enough to go up and check on conditions on the mountain. The road is still closed into Bunny Flat, there is a Chance they might open it, but probably not until Fri or sat, if then. Because of the closures we have decided to camp right at McBride Springs. This is not exactly a backpacking winter camp out, but we feel that with the weather conditions it is the safest thing to do. It still looks like we will have a good turnout, with some folks heading in on Thursday and most in on Friday. They are calling for 2 to 3+ feet of snow in the next couple days. Parking for McBride Springs is actually a couple hundred yards past the actual campground, unless someone wants to dig out a spot. I suggest that we set up tents in the campground, Bob said there are some good sites that still give you a good wilderness setting. This will actually be a perfect site for those that are still new to the snow camping thing. There is a back road that heads up to Sand Flat that may prove to be a good hike/ski, avalanche conditions permitting. If we have fire wood, we can build a camp fire. I sent my cell number to those on the list, if anyone needs it and you didn't get it, please drop me an email. Remember...Bring chains, you may very well need them, and check road conditions. There is a chance that they will close I5 tomorrow night before I can leave, if thats the case, I will be up on Friday when they do open it. I5 is rarely closed very long. I will be there. Any questions please let me know tonight if you can.” There is a Geocache up here as well for those of you that have a GPS. Wilderness permits are free, unless you go above 10'000 feet or plan to summit. You can self-issue your permits and passes at the trailhead, or pick one up in town. You can also self-issue at the permit station outside the main office of the Mt. Shasta Ranger Station 24 hours a day. You can call the 5th Season snow phone for daily updates on conditions and weather. 530-926-5555 Camp coordinates (approximate) 41° 21.570' N 122° 14.421' W 7000' Radio frequency 12/5 McBride Springs McBride Springs and Shasta city Directions to Bunny Flat You can find a live cam of Shasta here. A couple of great links for Shasta are.. USDA Forest Service Mt. Shasta Avalanche Center and Mount Shasta Climbers Guide and of course.. Mt Shasta, The Magic Mountain also....
