trips - An Adirondack ExperienceTrip Info
DescriptionGroup limit for Part 1: 8 due to DEC rules. 6 or less would be best as it is hard to fit 8 in a lean-to. This trip is intended to offer a glimpse of all the different things the Adirondacks have to offer. There will be some valley hiking, camping in remote places, beautiful ponds, lakes, and rivers to see, some peak bagging (46ers and fire towers challenge), canoeing, and fishing. Suggested guild books: Adirondack Trails: High Peaks Region, 13th edition Adirondack Trails: Northville-Placid Trail, 3rd edition Both of these books include a folded map that should cover all of the areas we will be hiking in. Part 1: Map Part one will be the bulk of the trip with a 6-day 50-mile backpack through the western portion of the High Peak Wilderness. Much of this portion of the hike we will try and stay in lean-tos, but please bring some sort of shelter as the lean-tos are first come first serve and it is possible they will be occupied. Day 1: Saturday Profile We will meet in Keene Valley (home of the High Peaks) for breakfast at the Noonmark Diner. From there we will drive to Coreys Road, outside of Saranac Lake, and spot a few cars where we will be hiking out of. From there we will drive into Long Lake and park at the Northville – Placid Trailhead just outside of town. We will follow the NPT and camp along the shore of Long Lake. Distance: about 4.9 miles Day 2: Sunday Profile Follow the NPT along Long Lake to the first Cold River shelters. Distance: about 9.3 miles Day 3: Monday Profile Continue to follow the NPT up the Cold River Valley to Duck Hole. Distance: about 11.9 miles Day 4: Tuesday Profile Back track along the NPT to the junction of the Ward Brook Truck Trail. Follow the truck trail to the Ward Brook shelter. Day hike up Mt. Seymour. Distance: about 9.4 miles Elevation Gain: about 2580’ Elevation Loss: about 2660’ Day 5: Wednesday Profile Day hike up Mt. Seward, Donaldson, and Emmons. Distance: about 8.8 miles Elevation Gain: about 3620’ Elevation Loss: about 3620’ Day 6: Thursday Profile Follow the truck trail to the Blueberry Pond Trail and finally out to the Coreys Road parking area. Distance: about 5.6 miles Distance for Part 1: about 49.9 miles Part 2: Map The remainder of the trip will be a stay at Wakely Dam, on Cedar River Flow, where we will car camp. Day 6: Thursday From Coreys Road we will drive into Long Lake stopping at either Fish Creek State Campground or Lake Eaton State Campground to use there showers. I believe we will have to pay a $3 day use fee. At Long Lake we will pick up the cars at the other trailhead and to get a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants in town. From there we will follow Route 30 south towards Indian Lake until we take a right onto Cedar River Road. At the end of the road are Wakely Dam and Cedar River Flow where we can car camp. Day 7: Friday Profile We have the option of sitting around camp, paddling out on the Flow, hiking up near by Wakely Mountain with its 70’ fire tower, or any combination of the above. Distance: about 7.6 miles Elevation Gain: about 1670’ Elevation Loss: about 1670’ Day 8 & 9: Saturday & Sunday Explore the area around Cedar River Flow Photos of some of the areas we will be visiting. NPT: Long Lake to Cold River Valley NPT: Cold River Valley to Duck Hole Seward Range
