trips - Dome Land WildernessTrip Info
DescriptionThis is a one or two night backpacking trip in a varied land of granite domes, spires, and obelisks interspersed with grassy meadows and chaparral and forest. I'm using the book, "Exploring the Southern Sierra: East Side" as a reference guide. T63 is a semi-loop trip out to Manter Meadow. It's 9.2 miles with a side excursion of 6.2 miles to the edge of Rockhouse Basin. Those going just Saturday night will do the loop and the side trip if they want to. Those going Saturday and Sunday nights will do the loop and the side trip. This will be a moderate trip and the trailhead will be accessible from the west/south via Sherman Pass or from the east via Kennedy Meadows. **UPDATE 6/23** Sherman Pass is now open! So you can get to the trailhead from the west/south/or east. From the west... From Hwy 65 and the small town of Ducor take County Road M-56 east to CA Hot Springs. At the "T" in Hot Springs turn left and take County Road M-50 over Parker Pass. At the stop sign at Parker Pass, go straight to Johnsondale. A few miles past Johnsondale you'll cross the Kern River then immediately turn left on the Sherman Pass Road. 6 miles up the Sherman Pass Road turn right on the Cherry Hill Road (Forest Road 22S12). Take this road to Big Meadow. The trailhead is at the southeast corner of Big Meadow. There should be a sign that says 34E37 "South Manter Trail". From the South... From Hwy 178 at the Lake Isabella Dam, go north on Hwy 155 towards Wofford Heights and Kernville. In Kernville take County Road M-99 north along the Kern River. Before you cross the Kern River you'll see the Sherman Pass Road on your right... Then follow the directions above. From the East... From Hwy 395 take the turn off for Kennedy Meadows that's north of the 14/395 intersection but south of Little Lake. This is also called J-41 or the Nine Mile Canyon Road. Go up up up it to Kennedy Meadows, then follow the signs west to Blackrock. From the Blackrock Ranger Station, follow the signs to Sherman Pass. Go up and over Sherman Pass (watch for snow, rocks on the road, and logging trucks). On the downhill side look for the Cherry Hill Road (Forest Road 22S12)... then follow the directions above.
