trips - Black Forest Trail BackPack TripTrip Info
DescriptionPart of the Backpack Pennsylvania Challenge 2005. This is a rugged 45 mile loop trail and hopefully we can do all of it. We'd have to be agressive and do it in three days. ![]() Sign up if you're interested. Trail Description The Black Forest Trail is a 42.1 mile loop trail in the northwest corner of Lycoming County near the village of Slate Run, PA. Slate Run is located along Pine Creek on highway 414, 27 miles north of Jersey Shore, PA. The trail starts and finishes in a pine plantation 0.8 mile from the Slate Run Village on the State forestry road. The foresty road leave Route 414 in a westerly direction. The name Black Forest was derived from the dense, dark (Black) virgin coniferous forests that originally covered the region. The Black Forest Trail is a rugged trail with many vistas as the trail winds up to heights overlooking Slate Run, Morris Run , Big Dam Hollow, Naval Run, and Pine Creek. There are many steep climbs on the Black Forest Trail but the vistas are well worth the effort. In the spring, when the water is high, the many creeks that traverse the trail provide numerous beautiful scenes. Maps and some inf from Pennsy update 1/25/05 Black Forest Trail - Entire Loop Black Forest Trail - northern Section Black Forest Trail - southern section Black Forest Trail overview Black Forest Trail elevation profiles Here's some maps and info I came up with. Definately select "view full size" on the entire loop, north, and south section maps to see all the detail. I broke the elevation profile into 4 sections. The overview map lacks some detail and info, but I think it's a decent overall image, with mileage markers, parking areas, and campsites noted. Legend: RED = Black Forest Trail (blazed in orange on the actual trail) BLUE = other trails, side trails, and bailout trails. YELLOW = the detour if Slate Run is too deep to cross. RED STAR = BFT trailhead (mile 0) YELLOW X = Slate Run stream crossing From Pennsy's post: I included yellow tent icons to designate the many campsites along the BFT. These are the campsites noted on the official BFT map. The sites where I also added the text "camp" are campsites where I camped at, and can verify, notably Foster Hollow. I also noted the many parking areas, but most I believe are road pullouts. There is one large designated hiker parking area, but I don't know the exact location. Jmitch or anybody else help here? There are many other side trails and dirt roads on the map that I didn't hilight, so there are many options to doing this trip. ![]() ![]() the one and only Capn Bobo on the BFT
