trips - Indian Summer in the AdirondacksTrip Info
DescriptionNOTICE: I JUST FOUND OUT TODAY OCT 10 THAT I WILL HAVE TO WORK THIS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY, WHICH LIKELY FATALLY JEOPARDIZES THIS TRIP FOR ME. AS OF NOW, I'M STILL DEBATING ON WHETHER ITS WORTH IT FOR ME TO GO JUST FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. MY APOLOGIES FOR THE SHORT NOTICE; BELIEVE ME, I'M JUST AS BUMMED ABOUT THE WHOLE THING... THAT BEING SAID, IF ANYONE WANTS THE REINS OF THIS TRIP, EMAIL ME PHANTOMSOUL@ONCEUPONAPHANTOM.COM Formerly posted as Indian Summer in the Catskills, this trip has been moved about 150 miles north due my obsession with the Adirondacks, and popular consensus among trip attendees. THU 13 OCT: Meet at South Meadows (car) campsites Thursday night whenever everyone gets there and crash out for the night. FRI 14 OCT: Wake up and move out ASAP and shuttle over to the DEC trailhead at the Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR/Ausable Club) in Keene Valley. From here we will head up Pyramid Mtn (leaving AMR/Ausable Club lands and entering the High Peaks Wilderness), and then to The Gothics itself. From The Gothics, we will head west to Saddleback and Basin and finally set up camp at the Snowbird sites in the col between Basin and The Haystacks. ADK Trail Numbers: 25, 35, 4, 9 Distance: 8.8 mi (14.2 km) Ascent: 4,640 ft (1,414 m) Peak-Bagging-Bragging Summary - 10/14: The Gothics: 4736 ft / 1443 m Saddleback: 4515 ft / 1376 m Basin: 4827 ft / 1471 m PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AMR/AUSABLE CLUB LANDS ARE PRIVATE LANDS ACCESSIBLE TO DEC WILDERNESS HIKERS VIA A LAND EASEMENT, AND THAT ON THEIR LANDS, ALL PETS ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED. SAT 15 OCT: Once again wake up (yeah, it happens once a morning or so -- unless you don't sleep well), pack up shop and head over The Haystacks (Mt Haystack and Little Haystack), then to The Marcys (Mt Marcy and Little Marcy). After Mt Marcy, we can also optionally visit Mt Skylight, Gray Peak, and Mt Colden, depending on time and energy (we'll be able to make those calls on the fly) and camp at one of the Feldspar Brook, Uphill Brook, or Lake Colden leantos (can also be decided on the fly). ADK Trail Numbers: 9, 10, 9, 1, 121, 122, 121 Distance (to Feldspar, incl. marked spur trails): 6.3 mi (10.1 km) Ascent (to Feldspar, incl. marked spur trails): 2,820 ft (870 m) Peak-Bagging-Bragging Summary - 10/15: Mt Haystack: 4960 ft / 1511 m Mt Marcy**: 5344 ft / 1628 m Mt Skylight*: 4926 ft / 1501 m Gray Peak*: 4840 ft / 1475 m Mt Colden*: 4714 ft / 1436 m SUN 16 OCT: Wake up for a third and final time and head up the Algonquin Pass trail to say hi to the McIntyres on our way out. Featured peaks will be Algonquin Peak, and optionally Iroquois and Wright Peaks before cruising down to an easy finish at the Adirondack Loj, where a car will be spotted to take us out of the woods. ADK Trail Numbers: 121, 69, 71, 66, 71, 64, 65, 64 Distance (incl. spur trails): 12.3 mi (19.7 km) Ascent (incl. spur trails): 3,150 ft (969 m) Peak-Bagging-Bragging Summary - 10/16: Iroquois Peak*: 4840 ft / 1475 m Algonquin Peak***: 5114 ft / 1558 m Wright Peak*: 4580 ft / 1395 m TOTAL DISTANCE: 27.4 mi (44.0 km) TOTAL ASCENT: 10,618 ft (3,253 m) *Denotes an optional peak. Optional peaks are located along spur trails that can be bypassed as necessary depending on time and energy. **At 5344 ft, Mt Marcy is the highest peak in New York. It's also the 6th highest peak in the Northeast, and the highest peak in the Northeast outside of New Hampshire's White Mountains. ***At 5114 ft, Algonquin Peak is the second highest peak in New York and, together with Mt Marcy are the only two peaks in New York above 5000 ft. Of course, this plan assumes that we will have fair weather. Should the weather be less than cooperative (it's not that uncommmon to see winter weather in the Adirondacks by mid-October), we may have to adjust plans as necessary -- TBD. The Adirondack trails feature often steep terrain, much of which is on open smooth rock slab, so bring boots with good tread so you don't fall off the mountain... More details to come soon... Keep your eyes peeled.
