Description

It’s official; Lumberzac has lost his mind. This will be my hardest Adirondack hike to date. The plan is to backpack over the Great Range, the Marcy Group, and most of the MacIntyre Range.

Group limit: TRIP IS FULL
Map
Here is my plan:

Thursday night or Friday morning:
Spot cars at ADK Loj. Parking is $9 (2004) per day.
Adirondack Loj Trailhead

Friday: Begin hiking the Great Range Trail from the Rooster Comb parking area (free) in Keene Valley. Hike over Hedgehog and Rooster Comb Mountains, and then start hitting some High Peaks. From Rooster Comb we would continue hiking the Range Trail over Lower Wolfjaw (4175‘), Upper Wolfjaw (4185’), Armstrong (4400’), Gothics (4736’), Saddleback (4515’), and Basin (4827’) and set up camp at one of the two designated campsites between Basin and Haystack at the Sno Bird site.
Distance: About 10.8 miles
Elevation gain: about 7125’
Elevation loss: about 4250’
The Lower Great Range
The Upper Great Range

Saturday: Break down camp and follow the Range Trail up Haystack (4960’). From Haystack, we will backtrack slightly and follow the Phelps Trail until it junctions with the Van Hoevenberg Trail. We will then follow the Van Hoevenberg Trail to the summit of Mount Marcy (5344’). From Marcy we will head down to Four Corners and hike up Mount Skylight (4926’), back down to Four Corners, follow the Feldspar Brook Trail down to Lake Tear of the Clouds, take the herd path up Gray Peak (4840’) and head back down to Lake Tear. From Lake Tear we will continue down the Feldspar Brook Trail to the junction of the Opolescent Trail, hike over to Lake Arnold, and hike over Mount Colden (4714’) to Lake Colden. At Lake Colden we will cross the dam and try and camp at Beaver Point or one of the campsites near the Lake. This area is heavily used and we may have to split our group up and share sites with other groups in order to ensure a place for everyone to sleep.
Distance: About 12.3 miles
Elevation gain: about 5240’
Elevation loss: about 6380’
Mount Haystack
Mount Marcy
Mount Skylight
Gray Peak
Mount Colden

Sunday: We will hike from Lake Colden up to the MacIntye Range. Once we get up on the Range We will follow the herd path over Boundary Peak and up Iroquois Peak (4840’). From Iroquois, we will head back over Boundary and head over Algonquin Peak (5114’) and back to Adirondack Loj, hitting Wright Peak (4580’) along the way.

Distance: About 8.5 miles
Elevation gain: about 3450’
Elevation loss: about 4060’
MacIntyre Range

The total distance of this trip will be about 31.6 miles with about 15,815' of elevation gain and about 14,690' of loss. We will hike over 14 Adirondack High Peaks and 3 other lesser peaks.

Please note that no fires are permitted in the Eastern High Peaks and starting in April bear canisters will be required.
