trips - Just another backpacking trip to the SmokiesTrip Info
DescriptionThis trip is filled up. ![]() the view from Clifftop Peak on Mt. LeConte this trip is going to have limited space due to camping regulations in the Smokies. We will camp in shelters and I cannot promise that I'll be able to guarentee you space. I will reserve as many spots as I can. Day 1: Alum Cave Bluff Trail to the summit of LeConte and then the Boulevard Trail to the Appalachian Trail. From there we will hike north to Ice Water Springs Shelter and drop packs. We will camp the first night at the Ice Water Springs Shelter. It is a short hike to Charlies Bunion, so we can hike there after we set up camp and check out the amazing view. 13-14 miles and 5-6,000 feet of elevation gain ![]() Clingmans Dome viewed from the Alum Cave Trail day 2: Appalachian Trail Southbound to New Found Gap. We will bag Mt. Kephart along the way. Continue on the AT southbound and camp at the Mt. Collins Shelters a short ways off of the AT on the Sugarland Trail. We will bag Mt. Collins. 10 miles and 2-3,000 feet of elevation gain Day 3: Continue SB on the AT towards Clingmans Dome, taking a short detour to Andrew's Bald. 5 miles and 1500-2500 feet of elevation gain. We will spot cars at the Alum Cave TH and at Clingmans Dome. ![]() Viewing Newfound Gap from Mt. LeConte near High Point Peak. If we have time and energy left Sunday - I think we should try and bag the Chimneys. It's a short steep 4 mile round trip hike and it has some cool scrambling and amazing views. We could ditch Andrews Bald if time is an issue. I'd rather climb the Chimneys than Andrews Bald. The Chimneys are not along the route though. We'd have to get in our cars at the trailhead at Clingmans Dome and drive to the trailhead for the Chimneys. It would be cool if we bag both the Chimneys and Andrews Bald. - ![]() Mt. Guyot viewed from Myrtle Point on Mt. LeConte - a short trip off of the Boulevad Trail. This is Mt. LeConte's third highest peak. more Smoky Mountain pics: http://community.webshots.com/album/123828443FBZvAe http://community.webshots.com/album/123846353oNCRNI
