trips - Mother's Day Weekend Kids' TripTrip Info
DescriptionI am planning a trip to Red River Gorge again this year over Mother's Day weekend. I was there last year over Mother's Day weekend, and it seems like a great tradition to keep going. This is a fantastic time of year to go. The morels are out. Everything is budding and starting to get lush. It's not too hot or too buggy yet. But it's warm enough for the kids to splash in the happy creek. Last year they also had fun playing with the giant millipedes that were seen occasionally on the trail. My plan is to base camp and day hike from there, with plenty of lounge-around-the-camp time to allow the little ones chances to explore on their own schedule. You are welcome to join us with or without kids. IMPORTANT NOTE: This would be a great trip for those of you with SO's who are hesitant to camp or backpack. The camping will be a step up from car camping in that we will not be in a campground per se. However, it is a very easy hike of 1 mile or less to get to the campsites. And the RRG is extensive enough that for those who are willing and able, they can do a substantial hike during the day and meet back at base camp at night where the rest of us will be waiting. For those who are not up to the hike, there are plenty of things to see via car. And it is pretty darn comfy to just hang out in camp as well. There is even a portapotty at the parking lot. =) Trip Planning Info: Web site for more info: http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/rrg.htm You will need to have a car pass in your vehicle to park in RRG. You can buy these at the Shell station in Slade. The Shell station is open until midnight. If I remember correctly, they are $10 for a 3-day pass. You also can purchase maps there as well. You may also be able to call the Stanton District Office (of the Daniel Boone National Forest) for information and maps at (606) 663-2852. WEATHER FORECASt: http://www.weather.com/activities/other/other/weather/tenday.html?locid=USKY1339&from=search_10day APRIL 28 UPDATE: Here are directions for you. Mapquest your directions to Slade, Kentucky. You will take Exit Number 33 off Mountain Parkway. First stop at the Shell Station to buy your permit for your vehicle. You should also be able to buy a map here if you wish. When you leave the gas station, turn left onto Route 15 Go a little less than 3 miles Turn left onto Tunnel Ridge Road Take this to the Grays Arch parking lot that will be on your right just under a mile. It has off-street parking, picnic tables, and fancy porta-pottys. You will hike the Grays Arch Trail for about 1.5 miles to King Branch. We will be setting up camp in this area. Along the way, make sure to stop at Grays Arch and spend some time exploring. It is spectacular with lots of photo ops. I figured we can all meet at the camp site. If you are bringing children, be aware that we will be near a very tantalizing shallow creek (4 - 8 inches deep). They will get wet!! Don't forget your camera. There are many, many photo ops here.
