trips - Hump Mountain to Roan High KnobTrip Info
DescriptionLots of great views from the high balds of Tennessee/North Carolina! In order: Hump Mt, Little Hump Mt, Jane Bald, Round Bald, and Roan High Bluff. Gonna be windy and wild! Day 1: US 19E to Overmountain Shelter (8.7 miles) Super-cool day. Up and over Hump and Little Hump Mountains. If we're lucky, we'll walk through a herd of grazing Watusi Longhorns from Africa. They're not dangerous, but they look it. Overmountain Shelter is, to my memory, the biggest shelter on the AT (it's a converted barn), and one of the coolest. The view of the valley from the sleeping quarters downstairs is spectacular! Day 2: Overmountain Shelter to Roan High Knob Shelter (6.5 miles) Jane, Round Bald, and Roan today. Roan is the highest shelter on the AT, but don't ask me what it looks like cuz I blew right past it in a miserable rain-storm. It's four-sided, I know that much. Day 3: Roan High Knob Shelter to Hughes Gap (3.3 miles); shuttle back to cars. Chili mentioned a friend that might be able to shuttle us. If not, Mountain Harbor B & B will take us for $20 total. Lets plan on meeting at Mountain Harbor Bed and Breakfast Saturday morning. They are located on 19E a quarter mile off the AT, between Elk Park, NC and Roan Mountain, TN, on the Tennessee side. Their phone number is 866-772-9494. Let's meet at 9am, unless anyone has any objections. my home number 765 453 7893 cell 765 271 4857
