Glacier National Park; Trip FAQ

Trip begins: August 15th, 2005 @ the trailhead parking lot approximately 3 miles west of entrance station, and .25 miles east of Apikuni Falls trailerhead, on north side of Many Glacier road. Meet @ 8:30am.


Trip ends: August 21nd, 2005. We will exit the park through Chief Mountain. I will not post any shuttle information until we get beyond the 1st of the New Year. When we were there this past year, I believe the shuttle showed up around 4:00pm.

Transportation notes: Everyone will be responsible for their transportation to Glacier. I will reserve the shuttle from Chief Mountain customs back to Many Glacier.


The trip!

Day #1: Many Glacier to Poia Lake.
Mileage: 6.02 miles
Elevation gain: 2696’
Elevation Loss: 1855’
Points of interest: Kennedy River Valley

Day #2: Poia Lake to Elizabeth Lake (head).
Mileage: 9.34 miles
Elevation gain: 2931’
Elevation loss: 3709’
Points of interest: Red Gap Pass. As we descend, a great view of the Pharmigian Tunnel.

Day #3: Lay-over @ Elizabeth Lake (head).
Activities: Fishing, slacking and side hikes! Whatever your heart desires. Many opportunities for great photographs if you’re an aspiring photographer.

Day #4: Elizabeth Lake (head) to Glenn’s Lake (head).
Mileage: 10.43 miles
Elevation gain: 3504’
Elevation gain: 3446’
Points of interest: Look back up to Red Gap Pass... and, yes, that is where we came from! Dawn Mist Falls, river crossing, Bear Mountain side-hike (optional)

Day #5: Lay-over day@ Glenn’s Lake (head)
Activities: Again – many possibilities. There will be a day hike up Stoney Indian Pass. You would also have the option of a hike up to Bear Mountain.

Day #6: Glenn’s Lake (head) to Gable Creek.
Mileage: 7.67 miles
Elevation gain: 1165’
Elevation loss: 1562’
Points of interest: Belly River Ranger Station. Awesome suspension bridge over the Belly River. Gros Ventre Falls

Day #7: Gable Creek to Chief Mountain Customs.
Mileage: 5.33 miles
Elevation gain: 673’
Elevation loss: 289’
Points of interest: Belly River Valley. Make sure to sneak a peak back as we leave!!
