DescriptionThis hike features the Burroughs Range, consisting of Wittenberg, Cornell, and Slide Mtns and the incredible campsite at Giant Ledge. Weather permitting, there will be spectacular views all around the Catskill Mountains as well as the Hudson Valley. The preliminary itenerary is as follows: Sat 27 Aug: Meet up at the Woodland Valley trailhead parking area at 8 AM and head up to the Burroughs Range, first hitting Wittenberg, then Cornell, and then Slide Mtn. Slide Mtn is the highest peak in the Catskills and Southern New York. From Slide Mtn, we will descend into the Neversink valley and Winnisook Pass to cut over to Giant Ledge, where we will set up camp at what is quite possibly one of the most scenic campsites I've ever stayed at. Sun 28 Aug: We can optionally bag Panther Mtn, which is just past Giant Ledge. Afterwards, we strike camp and head back down the mountain for an easy finish back at Woodland Valley. Optionally, we could get a site or two, depending on demand at the public Woodland Valley Campground to camp at on Fri 26 Aug after getting there. Contact information below. Last time we did this loop, it was November and immediately after an unseasonable snowstorm, leaving a couple of inches of snow for us to hike in. Though that was nice, I don't think we'll be battling snow this time around. Even though it's August, temperatures shouldn't be too bad, as New York always cools down at night. Hope to see you there!
