Description

*************UPDATE************
11/2/2005 - The Green River ferry is open for business people! This will save us big time in the morning getting from the visitor's center to the trailhead. We will stick to the plan below as it is posted and just add a trip across the river to it.

Cannot wait to see everyone!
Drive carefully!

10/18/2005 - The Green river is still low, but I was informed that even a small amount of rain will swell the river enough to re-open the ferry. So everyone, pray for rain between now and then! This only effects us in that the travel to the trail head will be longer.

Pitts, myself and few others will arrive sometime in mid afternoon on November 4. The first thing we will do is obtain the backcountry permits for Saturday's hike. After this we will get a few campsites at the headquaters campground for those of you that will be coming down on Friday. We will have some way of telling you Friday people of how to find us. It is not a huge campground, just look for someting obvious related to Trail Talk.

I am now making the call time 8 AM C.S.T at the Visitor's Center on Saturday. If you can get there about 10 minutes early, that will help.

After the permits are signed, we will get to the trailhead (hopefully the ferry will be open) as fast as possible.

If you are running late to the Visitor's Center on Saturday, call my cell phone (listed below) and let me know your status. You will have to register before you start hiking.

FRIDAY

I will be driving down from Chicago on Friday November 4 and staying at the headquarters campground. I do not have a site reserved because they stop taking reservations on October 31. However, I did speak with a ranger and she advised that the campground is open through the month of November on a first come, first serve basis. She added that there should be no trouble with you getting a site. If you get to the campground before us, I will reimburse for the cost of the site. If we get there first, I will have a sign directing those that come after us where we are camped at.

SATURDAY

Meet at the visitor center at 8:00 AM CST on Saturday November 5.

We will then take the Green River ferry (if it is open) to the trail head at First Creek. If the ferry is not open, we will have to take back roads. Below is a map of the park. The following is a plan for the hike on Saturday. We all do not have to stick to this. One group can try this route while another group take a more direct route to our campsite for the evening. We can decide this on Saturday after everyone has arrived.

PROPOSED HIKING ROUTE

First Creek Parking Lot -> McCoy Hollow Trail

McCoy Hollow Trail South -> Wet Prong of Buffalo Loop (@ intersection of Buffalo Loop and McCoy Hollow Trail)

Wet Prong of Buffalo Loop Trail North -> First Creek Trail

First Creek Trail East -> Collie Ridge Trail

Collie Ridge Trail South (past cemetery) -> Collie Ridge

Collie Ridge Trail East (very short backtrack) -> Good Spring Loop Trail

Good Spring Loop North -> McCoy Hollow Trail

McCoy Hollow Trail South/West -> First Creek campsites 1/2 (Saturday camp)

Sunday - continue hike, clockwise on First Creek loop until we meet back with First Creek trailhead parking lot

By hiking the above route, it looks like we will make anywhere from 14 to 17 miles for the day. As I said above, if you think this is too much for you, there are much shorter routes you can take to get were we will be camping. The trails in the park are well marked and you should have no trouble guiding yourself off of a printed copy of the map.

CAMPSITE RESERVATIONS

Yes, we will need them for Saturday and reservations are free. The rule of the park is that you are only allowed 8 hikers per backcountry site. We will be reserving both sites at First Lake. Eight of us will sign up for campsite one and the rest will sign up for campsite 2. These sites will be large enough to hold all of us nad we can camp on the bigger of the two.

Please get to the Visitor's Center as close to 8AM, or sooner if you can so we can get the reservations squared away as quickly as possible.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
