DescriptionItinerary for 4 days and 3 nights: This itinerary only works if we can arrange for a shuttle. If we can't work this out we will need to make different arrangements. Day 1 = November 9, 2006 (Thursday) Day 4 = November 12, 2006 (Sunday) Day 1: Optional. For those that have a long drive we can meet at Lake Tree Campsite the night before. Day 2: Meet at Lake Tree Campsite by 10am. Hike from Lake Three Campsite to Marengo River (8.5 miles) Day 3: Hike from Marengo River to Porcupine Lake (11.1 miles) Day 4: Hike out to parking area on FR213 (2.9 miles) Late Arrival Information: Arriving on Friday Night/Saturday Morning: If you look at the trip map (download the large map below) you will see that FR 202 has a parking lot just West of Camp 2. The group will hike past this parking lot Saturday morning. Feel free to hike in to camp on Friday night from this parking lot or wait for us in the parking lot Saturday morning. Camp sites: Lake Three Campground: Here are driving directions from Mellon, WI. Marengo River: The shelter is about 200 yards east up the trail from the Marengo River. Porcupine Lake: The campsite is located on the North by Northeast part of Porcupine Lake about 100 yards south of the trail. Weather: Temps in this area range from low 40's to high 20's in early November. It could snow and/or rain. This hike is a story about woods, very big woods. Along the way there are a few lakes, as well as a handful of viewpoints from rock outcrops, but the overwhelming theme here is the forest. It is a beautiful forest of large, relatively old hardwoods, with a scattering of pines. There is a mystique to woods this large, and a mere 100 yards into my hike of this route I got a vivid reminder of that. Wolf tracks, tack sharp in mud, and scat not yet cold on a thirty-five-degree morning left my senses racing.
