Just ordered a new digital camera:

FUJI FinePix 2600

After hiking with Pennsy Hiker and Corporal Nasty, I just had to get one. Actually, I already have a digital camera, but it's really really old and I lost the memory card for it.

I figured after about 15 trips, this camera will have paid for itself with the amount I spend on piece of junk disposables and film developing. And I like taking lots of pictures to boot. That's my justification, dammit.

Anybody have one of these puppies or no someone who does? It's gotten really good reviews, had all the features I was looking for (x3 optical zoom and at least 2 megapixels).

Also got a 128 MB memory card.

Fujifilm 2600
I love mine,, wouldn't hit the trail without it,,, the Macro setting is super for close ups of flower blooms, or bugs (if your into that sort of pics!),,,, I fly fish, so the insects are of a bit of an interest to me!!!! (just don't drop it in the stream!!!!!!!!!!),,,,

Hey - What happened to your statement "hope you don't mind if I drop you an e-mail sometime once I narrow down some choices to get your opinion?"

Wow, you act fast. Act quicker and cancel the order. Anything but that one!!!

Just kidding. I think you'll do great with the 2600. 2mps and the 3x zoom should work well. At the highest resolution (1600x1200 fine jpg), you should get about 160 shots on that 128 card. Plus, Fuji makes good stuff.

Have fun with it!

LOL @ Pennsy! I was going to, but felt confident in my research, which was based on your advice, by the way. I went the at least 2 megapixels and x3 optical zoom route. Did numerous searches based on that criteria and came up with what looked like a solid buy for less than $200. Read several reviews on it, which were overwhelmingly postive. I just couldn't wait so I got it!

And after seeing that Tiger Lily photo Wind Walker took, I REALLY feel good about my purchase now.. great detail in that pic! :-)

Welcome to the digital photo world.

I just dropped some major $ on a Nikon Coolpix 5700...and a little more $ on a 256Mb CF card. It'll come in handy on my New Zealand vacation next month.

Gear Slut did drop some serious money on that camera! How did you like it?

If anyone is looking for a photo printer, I just got the new http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product%5Fcode=300759&csearch;=&cmid;=&pfp;=srch1" target="_blank">Canon i950. The prints are really amazing with this thing. Its hard to tell from a 35mm print, even at 8 x 10. Much better than the more expensive HP 7550. It has however, revealed the shortcomings in my 1.3 megapixel Olympus.

Im looking for a good 34 megapixel camera for under $500 or so. Ive been looking at the http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_reviews/c4000.html" target="_blank">Olympus C-4000 and the Fujifilm FinePix 3800. Anyone have any experience with either of these? Anything else in that price range I should look at?

Violin. I just got a Canon S30 and so far, all I can say is, IT ROCKS! 3.2 mp, small, aluminum clamshell body, 3x zoom, shoots one minute mpegs, has a stich feature (panoramics), macro, fully manual camera settings, etc. It's great.

I'd have to go with Rosey on tjhis one. I have a Canon A40, and I've compared it firsthand with several of my friends similar models by other brands. I'm generally not a brand-name loyal type, but I'd buy another canon in a minute.

The s30 is what I would upgrade to, were I looking to upgrade.

The thing about he Canon cameras that I love is that thy're all fully manual if you like that, and they have the auto mode as well.

I've taken some pretty god pics, and mine is justa 2.1mp...

Here's a bunch of pics I took on a day hike last week.

The battery life has also been excellent with this camera.

To be honest, I should mention the downsides I've noticed.

Only came with a 16 MB card and it fills up fast. I saw at Fry's they carry a 1 GIG card now!!

Battery burn time is lackluster. Will have to get a second battery for it.

Other than that, it's killer. Decent software bundle too.

Check out bhphotovideo.com. Not the cheapest, but they're in NYC and have been around 30+ year. A real photog shop not a fly-by-night .com operation...

Can the Canon accept any kind of lens attachments?

Now I can take pics with you pros.

Yep!

Four arrays of 92 5-megapixel chips eaches.... 1.84 gigapixels. And it weighs 500 pounds, LOL

That's no toy helicopter carrying it either! Hovering at 15,000 ft for twenty hours at a stretch? It ought to be great for SAR, though ---- I wonder if it does infrared?
