Bigfootzy question
I'm doin' a bit of research here. Since many of you people spend some time in the wilderness, has anyone ever had an encounter, or possible encounter, with Bigfoot, aka Skookum, aka Sasquatch?

YES!
It was a very cold winter and it was -20 degrees. He was skeery, really tall with alot of body hair but didn't really smell too bad like most accounts. His stride length had to be about 4 feet, and he never put his whiskey in a plastic flask....

HA! dayhiker. That was funny. Better yet, remember the huge article they published on Jack-a-lopes some 6 years ago?

I was thinking of putting a short documentary on that. I would have gone to several of the small towns where BACKAPCKER magazine staff conducted interviews and conducted some of my own. I would have shot it in the same style as that movie that I cannot think of right NOW!!!

ARG! I hate when my brain does this to me.

You know the movie shot by 4 students for like $2,000 and then it went on to make millions.

I haven't, but would welcome an encounter. I don't hardcore believe in bigfoot, but am intrigued with the idea and wouldn't rule out the possiblity.

A friend of mine up in NY is a member of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization. He has several alleged audio tapes of sasquatch from isolated parts of Pennsylvania and the northern parts of the Adirondacks. Listening to his ideas and rationale is interesting because he puts up good arguments and has really done his homework.

Another good family friend who is very level-headed claims to have an encounter with a "skunkape", Florida's version of a bigfoot. He was either in or near the Everglades doing field research, and camped out in the back of his pickup truck w/ topper. According to him, he was woken up in the middle of the night by his truck shaking violently. He looked out the window and saw a large 8-9 foot creature jumping up and down on the bumper. He made eye contact with it, and the creature ran off.

Outdoor Life Network had a program on last week about the Alabama "Booger". It's supposed to be some kind of a Bigfoot type creature running around down there. I didn't catch the entire show since I fell asleep. I never heard of this creature before.

Okay, here's my encounter
I was just curious if anyone else had encountered El Sasquatcho. Here's my "encounter", and it's the God's honest truth.

This was about 15 years ago. I left one Friday evening after work with my dogs (at the time my family had a beagle and a poodle, I'll take anything with me!), and I was trying to find a lake up in Tahoe National Forest called White Rock Lake. According to the map, I could get there via a 4-wheel drive road, and I was in my Datsun 4x4 pickup. Way back behind Truckee, northeast of Fordyce Lake, I found myself driving slowly, at night, on rough rocky dirt roads, trying to figure out where in the heck I was. Roads would seem to peter out, or bisect with other 4-wheel drive roads, and I had no clue where I was going. I was way out in the middle of nowhere... no lakes or creeks or any destination type areas within miles. I decided to wait until daylight before I confused myself anymore in the darkness. I'm sure I didn't even need to pull off the little "road", but just in case, I did. I pulled into a little offshoot of the rocky road, just a few yards, which was surrounded by thick trees. I grabbed my sleeping bag, tossed it in front of my truck, and me and my dogs slept under a very starry night.

Here comes the freaky part. Sometime early in the morning, around 3 or 4 a.m. (it was still pitch black), I heard something walking up the road towards my direction. I could tell it was heavy, and it was walking steadily my way. At first I thought it must've been a backpacker, as it was obviously bipedal. The steps were distinct. Then I thought to myself, what in the flying flip would a backpacker be way out here on this road, in the middle of the night, with no light, with nothing but miles of thick forest in all directions? I knew it wasn't a bear (I've encountered dozens of bears in my years, both grizzlies and black bears). I had no idea what this was, but a backpacker was still my best guess. As it got closer and closer, I wondered if I should say something, but I didn't wanna scare the feller to death. But, for some reason, I was getting increasingly nervous myself. And I spend months solo backpacking, even in grizzly country, so there ain't much that spooks me in the woods. The odd thing was my dogs weren't making a sound, or a move for that matter, which added to the suspense.

This heavy, bipedal thing was coming closer and closer and was about to come to the point where I had pulled my truck off the road. I laid there very quietly. I didn't know what to expect, and hoped whatever or whoever it was would just continue on by, not even noticing me. It was so dark I couldn't see a thing. The closer it got, the bigger I realized it must be, because through the rhythm of the walk I could tell it was very heavy. No, it wasn't vibrating the ground like Godzilla, but it was close. I stayed silent in my nervousness. It came up to where I turned my truck off the road, and... silence. It stopped. It was only a few yards away from my face. I don't know if I made a sound, or one of my dogs made a sound, but what I experienced next was the most terrifying and strangest thing that's ever happened in my life. This thing let out the most heinous, forest-piercing scream you could imagine. I can't even attempt to put in words what this thing sounded like, but it had a set of lungs on it like nothing I could imagine. Then, still screaming, it turned around and ran back down the road in the darkness at a phenomenal rate of speed. It screamed the whole time, and I could hear the screams fading in the far distance, never letting up on the speed.

I laid there in total shock. I couldn't believe this just happened, that this was a real experience. I jumped up and hastily tossed everything back in my truck, my dogs just as freaked as me, and I backed out like a mad man. But before I turned away, my morbid curiosity got the best of me, and I knew whatever it was was LONG gone. Nervously, I creeped up the road with my brights on, trying to see if I could see any footprints or signs of anything odd. The road was too rocky for footprints. I opened the door and let my dogs out, hoping they would pick up a scent, but oddly they jumped right back in the truck. This was out of character for them. I tossed them back out again, and they jumped right back in. I decided to get the freak out of there and drove many miles back towards the main road. I hadn't thought much of a Bigfoot before then, but now I'm certainly a believer. People try and explain it away to me, but I know what I heard. I didn't "see" it, nor did I smell anything, but it was so close I could feel it. And it was so close when it screamed that I'm sure I got some spit on me. Nothing in those forests could scream like that, nor run that fast, especially nothing that walked upright. I don't dwell on Bigfoot, or seek it out, but I know it's out there.

And that's my Bigfoot story.

I belive you Buck.

My friggin' grandparents had a sighting here in Ohio. I know this will sound unbelievable, and I still can't believe it, but it happened.

When I was 14, my grandpanents (in thier late 50's) had gone on a country drive in Amish country (which they did very often). Amish country in Ohio are areas that are remote, but full of farms, and not too much woodland.

Anyway, the grandparents stopped by the house, and were all exicited and agitated. Grandma said that a white hairy thing jumped in front of the car and grandpa almost hit it. Grandpa said when it jumped in front of the car, it stopped, looked at grandpa for a few seconds, and then limped off into the hedges. Both grandma and grandpa said it was white, with long hair all over it's body. As a kid, I had read many books on bigfoot, and found the whole story hard to believe, until my grandpa said it smelled really bad, so bad he rolled up the window. This, according to what I read was very characteristic of bigfoot. My parents phoned the local authorities, who said they had over more than a dozen sightings that evening.

My grandparents never heard of bigfoot before this, and were thuoruoghly confused by the whole experience.

All I know is, it's pretty damed weird if you ask me.

Buck, I don't think you are crazy, I think something unexplained is running around out there, although I have no logical explanation for it.

Hi Nigal! You mentioned that we should have a Bigfoot carcass by now, therefore you don't believe in them. That's cool to believe that, but here's why I don't. I'm a whacko backpacker, much of my backpacking is bushwhacking through crazy stuff. I have encountered many wild bears in my time, both black bears and grizzlies. Take California for instance. There are estimated to be TENS OF THOUSANDS of black bears in this state. El tenzos of el thousandoz. They're everywhere. In all my backpacking, both off trail and on trail, I have NEVER come across a bear carcass. Never ever ever, as in zippo, zilch, nada. If there are only a handful of Sasquatches in all of California, how much less are we gonna find a carcass in the deepest wilds than finding a black bear carcass? Remember that fugitive anti-abortion killer guy they finally captured after many years, who spent a lot of his time hiding in the woods? It ain't difficult to hide in the woods and not get caught, if that's your goal. I have no doubt that a very shy, very smart, nocturnal wild animal can remain uncaught in the vastness of our forests. Sightings happen frequently, but they are usually quick. And yes, obviously there's plenty of hoaxes out there too. If you watched the recent documentary on The Discovery Channel entitled, "Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science", they had 12 scientists from various disciplines test the available evidence, scientists ranging from a world renowned primatologist to a DNA expert and a finger print expert studying dermal ridges. It's an amazing documentary, and most of these scientists concluded that the evidence is extremely strong for a large North American ape to be in existence. Of course there will always be skeptics until there's a body (and even then, some will still say it's a hoax), which is okay, I really don't care if anyone believes in Bigfoot or not. Ha ha! It's not like it's one of my lifelong goals to convince people "it" exists. I just know I had an encounter, as well as many other people, and I may be very skeptical if I were in your boots too. Either way, it's all good, it hasn't affected my life one way or the other, and I still hike solo in the most remote wilderness I can find. And that's what it's all about! YAAAA!

Yes Buck but there are many many bear sightings as well as shootings. In 250 years there is none of Bigfoot. Especially in the old days when they would have been more numerous some one somewhere would have shot one by now. I remain a sceptic.
